Abstract: A central concern in the works of Koda Aya (1904-1990), a distinguished Japanese woman author of essays, short stories, and novels, is the nature of memory and the significance of the past. Koda's portrayal of female characters whose mature, positive outlook is rooted in a firm understanding of their relationship with the past contrasts with the emphases of many of Koda's literary contemporaries in postwar Japan. Chapter I defines memory and recollection as central thematic and formal concerns of Koda's writings and discusses the uses of memory and the past in Japanese literature.

Koda Aya (1904-1990) was a critically acclaimed female writer and . Nonetheless, Sherif makes every effort to do so throughout the book, not without success.

Koda Aya (1904-1990) was a critically acclaimed female writer and essayist who began her career at the age of 43, for purely commercial reasons, and whose life and writing is closely identified with her father, the writer-philosopher Koda Rohan (1867-1947), Japan's first recipient of the Medal for Cultural Merit. It follows Alan Tansman's 1993 The Writings of Koda Aya, aJapanese Literary Daughter (Yale University Press), which is an excellent close reading of twenty or so of Koda's works.
