Summer of Rescue book. All the stuff I hate about short stories drawn out forever and ever into a novel. And I really, really wonder why the lost friend liked it so much

Summer of Rescue book. And I really, really wonder why the lost friend liked it so much.

She needed to listen to this: prodigal summer, the season of extravagant procreation. It could wear out everything in its path with its passionate excesses, but nothing alive with wings or a heart or a seed curled into itself in the ground could resist welcoming it back when it came. The other warblers woke up soon after the black-and-white: first she heard the syncopated phrase of the hooded warbler with its upbeat ending like a good joke, then the Kentucky with his more solemn, rolling trill.

Prodigal Summer: A Novel has been added to your Cart. In Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver masterfully delivers three narratives which begin in late spring, wind through the burgeoning summer of an Appalachian mountain and valley, and come together as autumn raises its cooler head. Deanna is a 38-year-old, divorced, childless forest warden who has come to love being alone in her woods near the top of the mountain that overlooks Zebulon Valley; she is determined to stay that way until a stranger comes along with the buds of May.

Summer of Rescue: Excellent Book! Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 15 years ago. Barbara Nelson's story of a woman and how she deals with her marriage and teenage daughter while struggling with the death of her son. This is a wonderful book appreciated by those who understand well-written, thought-provokig literature. The author has a nack for diction and beatufil imagery and uses subtle but lovely symbolism. An overall excellent, smooth read that will leave its impression on you!

However, Barbara Nelson is less concerned with turning a pretty phrase than telling her story, which turns out to be a good one. A familiar premise perhaps, a woman at a crossroads, but as one of the characters in this novel points out, there are only so many stories in the world, and they have been told throughout history, and will be told through time. At the center of "Summer of Rescue" is the Nichols family, minus one: Clare and Paul and their fifteen-year-old daughter, Jeanine. Their son, Michael, was killed a dozen years ago in a drowning accident

Set against the taut yet passionate landscape of the dry heat of Mirage, Arizona, Summer of Rescue illuminates the stunning, often ambiguous emotions of a woman coming to terms with her life. As Clare finds herself tempted by the romantic entreaties of a younger man, enviously watches her daughter become a woman, and confronts the memories of the tragic death of her son many years before, Nelson transforms the common events of life into a novel of uncommon grace and power.

Prodigal Summer: A Novel. In her most accomplished novel, Barbara Kingsolver takes us on an epic journey from the Mexico City of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo to the America of Pearl Harbor, FDR, and J. Edgar Hoover

Prodigal Summer: A Novel. Barbara Kingsolver's fifth novel is a hymn to wildness that celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature, and of nature itself. It weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives amid the mountains and farms of southern Appalachia. Edgar Hoover. The Lacuna is a poignant story of a man pulled between two nations as they invent their modern identities.

Clare Nichols faces a series of crises in her fortieth year--doubts about her husband, attraction towards Nate, a younger man, and uncertain feelings about her daughter's reaching womanhood

Summer of rescue by Barbara Nelson
Claire Nickels is turning 40. Her teenage daughter has discovered sex and they are at the lake
where her son drowned. Something in her marriage is lacking, she is drawn to younger males.
She works with her daughter and others for a show they hope to put on. She can make the music to accompany the show.
Keeps recalling moments with their son...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This book really is about characters rather than a plot. Clare, who is 40, is dealing with old grief, her age, and a teen daughter having sex. Normal everyday occurences, but her own emotions and unrecognized feelings are creating uncertainty in herself and in her life.
I picked this book up a few times, would read a few chapters and then set it aside. I finally finished it, and I did like the book, but it was slow going at times. Overal a 3 out of 5 rating
