Fences, the centerpiece of August Wilson's epic ten-play cycle, is a moving tale of one man's struggle to create a home and family in a world that seems bent on destroying his dreams. In this book, Menson-Furr displays her considerable talents as an award-winning teacher, explaining the play with a straight-forward facility that should connect with students. Series: Modern Theatre Guides.

August Wilson's Fences book. I would have liked more analysis, but considering this is a theatre guide and the bulk of it is dedicated to workshopping the play, the analysis that was present was spot-on.

Fences Introduction Along with his friend Rob Penny, he founded Black Horizons theatre . Fences won Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize

August Wilson was born Fredrick August Kittle on April 27, 1945. His parents were Frederick Kittel, a German immigrant, and Daisy Wilson, an African-American woman. Along with his friend Rob Penny, he founded Black Horizons theatre company in Pittsburgh. Later on, Wilson's play Jitney got him accepted to the Playwright's Center in Minneapolis. Fences won Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize. What's amazing is that when the play first came to Broadway, Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone was already playing there. This made Wilson the first black playwright to have more than one play on Broadway at the same time.

Fences represents the decade of the 1950s, and, when it premiered in 1985, it won the Pulitzer Prize. Set during the beginnings of the civil rights movement, it also concerns generational change and renewal, ending with a celebration of the life of its protagonist, even though it takes place at his funeral. Critics and scholars have lauded August Wilson's work for its universality and its ability, especially in Fences, to transcend racial barriers and this play helped to earn him the titles of "America's greatest playwright" and "the African American Shakespeare."

Stupidly bought theater guide not the book. Have no use of the theater guide. If I ever have the chance to see the play, I would probably not consult the guide.

This is not the actual play but an analysis of it. Disappointed because I wanted to read the play itself.

I wanted a copy of Mr. Wilson's play. This text gives notes on it rather than being a copy of the script.
