Babi Yar: A Document in the Form of a Novel (Russian: Бабий яр. Роман-документ) is an internationally acclaimed documentary novel by Anatoly Kuznetsov about the Babi Yar massacre. The two-day murder of 33,771 Jewish civilians on September 29–30, 1941 in the Kiev ravine was one of the largest single mass killings of the Holocaust. Kuznetsov began writing a memoir of his wartime life in a notebook when he was 14. Over the years he continued working on it, adding documents and eyewitness testimonies.

Anatoly Kuznetsov (1929-1979) was a Soviet writer best known for Babi Yar, a documentary novel that described his experiences as a child in German-occupied Kiev, Ukraine and his observations of the massacres that took place nearby. As an adult, chafing under Soviet censorship, Kuznetsov defected from the Soviet Union and continued to publish under the pseudonym A. Anatoli.

I've read many historical books about World War II and the atrocities committed therein. This is the first book about Soviet Ukraine (Kiev specifically) that I've read. Seen through the eyes of a 14 year old (non-Jewish) Ukrainian boy who observed the murder of thousands of Jews whose bodies were buried in a large ravine known as "Babi Yar." But the book continues on from that point, describing the boy's life with his mother and grandparents as the Germans occupied Kiev. Their struggles to survive and avoid starvation. It's richly drawn and I found the book difficult to put down. As the author states, everything is true. I highly recommend this book.

Babi Yar

The ‘Preface’ tells how the original manuscript was edited or censored for the original version. He escaped from the Soviet Union in 1969 with the microfilm of the complete manuscript. This book has three parts with unnumbered chapters for each Part, a total of 404 pages. The author tells he has been writing this book since he was fourteen years old (he was born in 1929). It is a documentary novel that “records only the truth - as it really happened”. He was born in Kiev and is listed as a Russian (his father’s nationality, his mother was Ukrainian). [I think “the Ukraine” means “the frontier”, some call it “New Russia”.]

Babi Yar is the name of a large ravine on the outskirts of Kiev. This was the site of Nazi massacres of people. The book is his memories of that time. The hardbound version contains different type faces to distinguish the author’s additions and the censored texts. These are his recollections of life under Nazi occupation. Did he personally witness all of these events? If not, I still believe his accounts as they match other known stories of Nazi occupation. The final chapter tells what happened to Babi Yar. At first it was filled with liquid mud. The dam collapsed and killed many. In 1962 soil filled in the ravine, new buildings constructed over it. Poplars were planted over the remains of the dam. There are no traces of Babi Yar today.

I remember the first ‘censored’ version published in the 1960’s as being a better story.

We recently visited Babi Yar and were told of this book. It brings history alive, is written well and is easy to read. Although I wouldn't have known of this book if I hadn't been told about it by our guide, I highly recommend it as addition to the library of anyone who is interested in what happened to the Jews, not only in the countries that are highly publicized, but also in Ukraine.
