I am overjoyed to have discovered Robert Rankin! I can't believe I never read him before! I just finished the Antipope, which will be the first in months of happy reading! This is a wonderful, hilarious, gripping story of what happens when evil comes to a town in England, and the only people who can battle it are a group of perpetual drunks, and eastender stereotypes with a few odd Deus ex machina (dei ex machinis??) thrown in for fun. These people were somehow very endearing. The villain, a Borgia no less, is so bad, with his evil little minions, that we are aghast as the onslaught against truth, justice, and human decency is waged.

To be 100% honest, when I first started reading, I thought I understood why I had a problem finding the books. They didn't seem to me like they would work well here in the USA. The humor seemed very, very British, and lots of phrases could only be understood in context (and here I thought we all spoke the same language!). Also, there is the fact that a few terms are terribly offensive to USA folks (some rude terms for Italians, for example). And, finally, we tend to find so much drinking as symptomatic of disease, not fine fun.

Having said all that, by page 50 I was swept away. I LOVED this book! I LOVE the characters! I can hardly wait to read the next on the list!

Someone said Rankin was like Terry Pratchett and unfortunately I believed them. The only thing they have in common is that they are British. It is a mildly entertaining story about a couple of drinking buddies who I unfortunately couldn't identify individually until towards the end of the book.

I read my first Robert Rankin in paper format quite a few years ago, and I have to insist that he's one of the great humorous authors of all time. I laughed all the way through this book - and swore a bit too - just as any good book should make you do. Rotten demonic bean things! Brilliantly twisty, down to earth, and clever - very clever. I've got ten of Rankin's paper books in my library now - dog-eared from rereading - and I'm building up my kindle collection. If you enjoy humour, madness and mayhem, buy the lot - they're all brilliant!

Some years ago, I loaned my physical copy of "The Antipope" to a friend. He was a longtime member of a local Doctor Who fan club, loved Red Dwarf, Blackadder, and all things Discworld. Some time later he gave the book back, telling me he couldn't finish it. "It was just too British."

Robert Rankin isn't much known in America. Certainly not to the extent that his contemporaries Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett are known. I think that's a shame. Rankin at his best is the equal of either, and "The Antipope" is one of his best. It is indeed very British, with the combination of bone-dry and absurdist humor that entails. It's clever and goofy and brilliant and nonsensical, sometimes all at once. Bottom line, do you like good things? Good things with "flavour"? Then get this. Get it twice, so when you loan one out to your Anglophile friends, you'll still have a copy to read when they don't want to give it back. Unless they're weak, and tell you it's "too British". Then you don't need a new book, you need new friends.

I first read this book way back when, and out of chronological order when I stumbled upon Robert Rankin's books in the local library. I since bought it, lost it, bought it again and then moved abroad inadvertantly leaving it behind. Bravo to Robert for self publishing this for the kindle, I can now own and read it once again, hopefully now never loosing it thus breaking tradition, an old charter or something.

Liking forward to seeing the rest of the books appearing on kindle.
(Why only 4 stars? I very rarely give 5 stars to any book)

I am an American fan of Robert Rankin, somehow. If you get your fiction from just about any brick and mortar store in the states, you will not find him. As such, who knows what cosmic event brought you to his doorstep? Oddly enough, for me it was a horror novel by Dan Simmons called Summer of Night. Something within that book, led to me to researching the infamous Pope Alexander VI, which led me to discovering a book by the name of the Antipope. I checked it out and I soon became immersed in the world of Jim Pooley and John Omally. I liked it so much that I read the The Brentford Triangle,East of Ealing,The Sprouts of Wrath and a whole bunch of other books by who was to become one of my favorite writers. Robert Rankin is pure genius! If you have yet to give him a try, now is time to take the leap... Today is the first day of the rest of your life with Robert Rankin.

Fordrellador
Somewhat one-dimensional characters make much of this book quite predictable. For example, the Irishman who can't or won't find work, who drinks like a fish but is still a "lovable rogue." But, it is not all bad and there are definite comic moments. Who doesn't like the idea the comeuppance of the twerp from central office, who descends upon the local pub full of ideas and willingness to order everybody about?

It was a Christmas present he liked it
