Chapter 17: Life After Death. About Robert Barnard. About schools, no doubt, they know something-perhaps they have schedules and inventories that tell them in wearisome detail what they should look for in the structure, the physical fabric.

Chapter 17: Life After Death. Chapter 1. Staff meeting. But to the soul of a school, to education itself, they are blind. I question, personally, whether these inspectors have not outlived their usefulness.

Rare
It took a little bit to get into it, mainly because I needed to realize which character was which. I'm glad I kept at it because it was worthy of my time.

Robert Barnard is my favorite author, His books are the best and School for Murder
is one of his best. Sandra

Robert Barnard is that rarity: one who writes mystery novels that may be better as novels than as mysteries.
This is an example of his early style: elegant, witty, epigrammatic, but extremely insightful.
I taught in a private school very much like the one described in this book, and Barnard's picture is dazzling in its accuracy and devastating in its satire. His command of personalities and politics and teacher/student relations is perfect.
Recommended for any lover of good writing, bad schools, and great mysteries.

Friert
It is difficult to choose among Barnard's books (they are all extremely well-written, literate entertainment), but this is one of the funniest. His gift for deft characterization is on full display here.
