A Jeeves and Wooster collection it is a little preparation of my own invention.

Ronald Psmith ( the ‘p’ is silent, as in pshrimp ) is always willing to help a damsel in distress. So when he sees Eve Halliday without an umbrella during a downpour, he nobly offers her an umbrella, even though it’s one he picks out of the Drone Club’s umbrella rack. A Jeeves and Wooster collection it is a little preparation of my own invention.

1 dark plottings at blandings castle. 3 eve borrows an umbrella. 4 painful scene at the drones club. 5 psmith applies for employment.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, KBE (/ˈwʊdhaʊs/; 1881–1975) was an English author, humorist and scriptwriter. After being educated at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life, he was employed by a bank, but disliked the work and wrote magazine pieces in his spare time. In 1902 he published his first novel, The Pothunters, set at the fictional public school of St. Austin's; his early stories continued the school theme.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse KBE (/ˈwʊdhaʊs/, WOOD-howss; 15 October 1881 – 14 February 1975) was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Born in Guildford, the third son of a British magistrate based in Hong Kong, Wodehouse spent happy teenage years at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life. After leaving school, he was employed by a bank but disliked the work and turned to writing in his spare time.

Wodehouse is always a relaxing read. Leave it to Psmith is something to read when you want diversion for a little while. It will not burden you with thought-provoking social issues (unless you're incurably oversensitive) and will not torment your nerves with suspense. There are no bad guys, and although some guys are annoying they don't get away with much. But, then, P. G. Wodehouse didn't even try to create complex, relevant plots. He wrote to amuse, and his ability to create funny sentences is still acknowledged as superb by masters of many languages.

This just might be my favourite PG Wodehouse so far.Of course I love Bertie and Jeeves but I think I have a marginal preference for Blandings (honorable mention to Ukridge!) and Psmith just sets this right off. The scene where Lord Emsworth prattles about his gardener Mc Allister's shortcomings on hollyhocks and yew trees while the fed-up poet Ralston McTodd feigns listening before absconds and Psmith takes his place without Lord Emsworth twigging is perhaps my favourite scene in the PGW reading I've done (which is about fifteen books and rising!)
Magnificent!
Love the cover too!

No writer is better at capturing the unique language, phrases, idioms, repartee, and eccentricities of English gentry than Wodehouse. Yes, it's not classic literature, and yes, we all need those challenging (but rewarding) reads once in a while, but there are few better writers you can absolutely count on for a good light read than Wodehouse. I love the Blandings series (of which this is one). Not quite on a par with "Uncle Fred in the Springtime", but close. Psmith is a classic character - affable and likable, and the series of misadventures about the stolen necklace, false identities, and the subtle humor to laugh out loud moments throughout are sublime. Wodehouse has a way with phrases and conversational dialogue that is unmatched. His writing is primarily first person dialogue - not a lot of scene setting - but what little there is, is done well. There's a steady barrage of "mini-crises", but always done with the right balance of humor. His characters are solid - and stay in character. Once you've discovered Wodehouse, you will have a wealth of reading you can count on for years. Highly recommended.

Hey, it's Wodehouse, and it's great. I won't rehash the plot ; it has been done. It is a hoot to read, and it is always well-written. Any day I feel down in the dumps, I just read Wodehouse and it lifts me. This is a great book.

All-out chaos ensues at Blandings Castle as various guests arrive, few of them being whom they pretend to be, and nearly everyone with the same objective: steal a priceless diamond necklace. Some of them are actually working in teams, although they don't realize this, since none of them are aware that the others have the same objective. Despite the flying flower pots and gunplay, this is typical Wodehouse in that nothing really serious happens and all is well in the end. A good light read that will leave one in giggles at times, the reader can't help but stop and occasionally re-read a bit, savoring the humor and the masterful phrasing that is all Wodehouse.

P. G. Wodehouse is kind of a formulaic writer: You know the young rich guy is a fop and a fool, the young woman is perfect and beautiful, the old rich guy is absent-minded, the old rich lady is a tyrant and the servants usually know best. But each time I read something he's written, I'm amazed at the turn of phrase, the sheer brilliance of his descriptions. Sometimes I'll go back and re-read a paragraph or a sentence just to enjoy his perfect craftsmanship. The first paragraph of this book made me laugh out loud, and I every night I looked forward to snuggling down with this happy little book.

I've always enjoyed P.G. Wodehouse's absurdity, and PSmith is, in my opinion, even more charming, convoluted, and funny than the Bertie and Jeeves stories.

Wodehouse achieves something that's rare in print, I think, literary silliness. If you take his plotting apart to see how he accomplishes this feat, you'll discover that he has made something that's difficult look so easy.

This one was great fun.

If you really want to get the most out of Wodehouse, try listening to his books on audio. Even funnier.

I understand that this was the last Psmith novel. I have read and loved all the Bertie/Jeeves novels as well as The Golf Stories and long ago some Blandings Castle work. I think that this is Wodehouse's most sprawling novel that I have read. I was slow to warm to the Psmith character, but I came 'round thoroughly. Highly recommended.
