In Petersburg in the eighteen-forties a surprising event occurred. An officer of the Cuirassier Life Guards, a handsome prince who everyone predicted would become aide-de-camp to the Emperor Nicholas I and have a brilliant career, left the service, broke off his engagement to a beautiful maid of honor, a favorite of the Empress's, gave his small estate to his sister, and retired to a monastery to become a monk. This event appeared extraordinary and inexplicable to those who did not know his inner motives, but for Prince Stepan Kasatsky himself it all occurred so naturally . . .

A wonderful thought-provoking story. Tolstoy delves deeply into the mind of a near-perfect person who wants to be better, holier. When Father Sergius cannot figure out how to serve God if he's busy serving people he comes to a life's crossroad.
Very timely in 2015 as we examine our ethical position and our collective courage in matters of conscience. A delightful discussion tool

Thought this was a classic from the first time i read it. This was the first book i read from the author Leo Tolstoy and must admit that I am in awe of his genius and brilliance.

I am by no means a critic of literature, but this short story perfectly encapsulates the common struggles that all who seek salvation will inevitably face with, of course, the simple and sweet rewards that we will receive on our journeys.

Pringles
This is a good translation of a great work by Tolstoy. The short story itself is worth the reading and re-reading.

I wanted to read the summer reading book along with my 15 yr old son. This free copy went onto my Kindle. Easy and convenient.

I am sorry that I purchased this item as it appears to be a rewritten, cheap, knock off of the the original Tolstoy, apart from the fact that the format is difficult to read. Sorry that I could not be more positive, but there it is none the less.

This book is really helpful. It changed my life.

Tolstoy has a gift to take you right into the heart of his characters.
