A Single Pebble book The last couple of books I have read by John Hersey were both disappointments, really not his best stuff

A Single Pebble book. Many new vocabulary words for me. He is surprised by the calmness to the loss of human life in China. The last couple of books I have read by John Hersey were both disappointments, really not his best stuff. But with A Single Pebble he again is lyrical and clear, subtle and bold in his writing. It was a really good book, and I would really recommend it. A Single Pebble tells the story of an American engineer who goes to China in the 1920s to figure out how to dam up the Yangtze River.

Pulled on a junk hauled by forty-odd trackers, he is carried, too, into the settled, ancient way of life of the people of the Yangtze - until the interplay of his life with theirs comes to a dramatic climax. About A Single Pebble. A rewarding novel; it is clearly thought and beautifully projected on the screen of the imagination. Looking for More Great Reads?

One of my favorite books of all times. It is the poetic and thought-provoking story of an American engineer sent to China to look for a site for a dam which would wipe out several cities, the traditional jobs of the boat people, and completely change the culture of the area, but also bring electricity and make the river safer for river travel. The naive ideas of the young Western engineer are pitted against the traditional river culture of the people who take him up the river, the people whose lives will be changed forever if the dam is built. Hersey raises questions about who has the right to determine the fate of a people, whether new technologies are inherently better than traditional methods, and whether it is possible to see past our prejudices.

The characters are unforgettable, the descriptions of the river beautiful and frightening, and the engineer's dilemma haunting.

This book is fiction, but sixty years after the book was written, a dam was built on this river submerging the villages along miles of the river including the village of Single Pebble.

John Hersey is also the author of Hiroshima.

I became an engineer, also.

The ASE and IEEE magazines printed lists of books favored by other engineers--some of my heroes, in fact. The book is written simply, probably appropriate for a junior high school literature class. An adult should devour the book over a short business flight.

Other reviewers, as well as the synopsis here, have explained the story. But I haven't read any that explain how this book relates to engineering. The protagonist is an Engineer, and is culturally distinct from his hosts despite his knowledge of many customs, cuisine, and the language. However, he adversely affects the chi of the boat, subtly disturbing everyone on board.

Further, he is also at odds with thier purpose. He brashly announces his intent to dam the river, intending to simplify and protect their lives with his technology, when he's actually threatening their comfort.

The story is something that all engineers should read--particularly young students--such that they might begin to understand one way that the process of engineering might take shape.

I have always been interested in China, and have been there. This is a well written description of the people, the geography and the author's travels up the Yangzte River before the big dam was built. I highly recommend the writer's style and colorful images.

Very good reading, Learned a lot about river travel on the Yangste River before the dams were built and the culture of the river people. Highly recommend it.

Rereading A Single Pebble is as savory as the first time. A lovely classic.

Kalv
This is a classic novel about the old China and the Yangtze River before the big dam was built.

Provided a great insight into a westerner's first trip to a foreign culture and geography. Relatively easy read.

My cardiologist recommended this book and said that it was his favorite. I enjoyed it and hated to see it end.
