The only child of Marvin and Katherine Rivers, she was born in Atlanta, Georgia, was raised in Fairburn, Georgia, and attended Auburn University, where she majored in illustration after initially studying architecture. She was named Loveliest of the Plains and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Shakataxe

Love reading her novels about the south. This one covered several couples over a lot of years and was, at times, happy and at times sad, but it was really how life is. The characters were real and very entertaining.

I'm bestowing four stars because this is my first book by this author. Others who are fans of the author and familiar with her style can give a better review, and do here. I am writing to say...caveat emptor. This book draws you in for a wild, lush ride for almost 600 pages. Unfortunately, there is no payoff for the reader, there is no catharthis in this weighty tome. You are propelled forward in the reading, and happy to ride or die for the duration,but the ending is nothing but an abrupt flurry of pages with a predicable curveball.

As always, Siddon develops her characters so that you would recognize them at KMart or the market. Her passion for place make you touch, smell, experience the texture of the Lowlands not far outside of Charleston. Feel like I've been on a trip, lived there and met new folks to call friends.

Talvinl

Once again Siddons follows her formula for a good read. The novel is told from the point of view of an "outsider" who marries into the privileged crowd that consists of at least one of each couple coming from the gentry of Charlestown. Theses are the jet setters of Charleston and it's islands and beaches.
Siddons continues to use her best vocabulary to describe the relationships of the 5 couples. She skillfully offers up the dynamics of the group who call themselves "Scrubs". They are devoted to each other and actually swear to never leave the group nor forsake any member. There will be no nursing homes for them.
The rest of the book is storytelling. Siddons is a master storyteller. Only at the end does the story becomes contrived. Nothing prepares the reader for the quIck mystery that finishes the story.
The ending is not reason enough to miss the rest of the story.. Certainly, a good read.

Bliss

I didn't like this as well as her other books. It seemed a bit more convoluted and although the author tried to create subterfuge around the ending it wasn't tough to see what was happening. I didn't feel the "realness" of the characters in the same way that I had her other books.

Like all of Ms. Siddons' books, I enjoyed this one but it stretches the imagination that the main characters have a plantation, a beach house, a house in the desirable historical section of Charleston, and a house out on the river. And the doctor who owns most of them trims his toenails in his office.........yuck! Writing about the privileged Southern life is Ms. Siddons' forte but some things are not always believable. Nonetheless, this book managed to evolve into a story filled with tragedies, comedic moments, poignantly sweet love stories, and pure evil. Overall, it tended to get bogged down in too much detail and also unlikely secondary story lines but manages to hold the reader's interest to the end.

An exquisite trip through life of friends. Tragedies, sorrows, love, & friendships are tested over years amid the historic Charleston traditions.,

The narrator talks about the group of long-time friends more as an observer than as part of the group, as she comes into the fold when all of them are adults - married with children. They welcome her versus reject her, but there is still that shared history of which she is not a part. I was totally unprepared for the ending, which was worth the wait. I love how Siddons develops her characters and always sends me to the dictionary.
