Anne Tyler The Tin Can Tree 1 After the funeral James came straight home, to look after his brother. There was no path to follow. Below them was the whole town of Larksville – the main street hidden by trees, but the outlying houses and the tobacco fields laid bare to the sun. He left Mr and Mrs Pike standing on that windy hillside while their little boy wandered in circles nearby, and the only one who saw James go was Joan. She looked over at him, but she didn't say anything. At the foot of the hill was the white gravel road where Simon and James both lived. They lived in a three-family house that looked like only a long tin roof from here. No houses stood near it.

The Tin Can Tree is a 1965 novel by Anne Tyler. The Pike family, including ten-year-old Simon Pike, are trying to carry on after the tragic, accidental death of six-year-old Janie Rose Pike. The brothers Ansel and James, relatives of the Pike family, also pitch in to lend support to the Pikes. In the end, the Pikes learn that even after the traumatic death of a young soul, life still continues and they cannot mourn forever.

In the small town of Larksville, the Pike family is hopelessly out of step with the daily rhythms of life after the tragic, accidental death of six-year-old Janie Rose. Mrs. Pike seldom speaks, blaming herself, while Mr. Pike is forced to come out of his long, comfortable silence. Then there is ten-year-old Simon, who is suddenly without a baby sister - and without understanding why she’s gone. Well, more or less, said James, and turned to the sports section. Course you do. You have to. Is that the Larksville paper?. Larksville paper’s not out till tomorrow. Oh. I thought today was Wednesday. The paper comes on Thursday. Ansel lay down again and stared thoughtfully upwards, lacing his fingers across his chest.

First of all, I love Anne Tyler's books! This is I believe her second effort (after If Morning Ever Comes), and is very good for a young writer. She was in her 20s when she wrote this. One can already see Tyler's uncanny (no pun intended) ability to read characters' minds, their intentions, and motivations. She does this very well even this early on, and really is good at creating believable male characters (especially)! Overall the book is a good read, far from her best. If you are just starting with Anne Tyler (or have read only her first 2 or 3 books--all of which she herself thinks of as uncharacteristic early attempts), I would recommend her latter works: Breathing Lessons (Pulitzer Prize winner), The Accidental Tourist, The Amateur Marriage, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (her personal favorite), and what I think is her best book of the last 10 years: Noah's Compass. Really, just about anything of hers from her 4th book on. Read these first, and then, as I did, go back and read the early stuff.

I've read all of Anne Tyler's works, so I was excited to read this one. I also purchased it as my first e-book. But it was so slow and uneventful. I kept waiting for turn of events that never came. Even as I got to the end of the story, and because it was an e-book and you don't have physical pages to see how far along or how much story is left, I was somewhat shocked when the end came! So sadly, I was dissappointed in this book. There was of course a certain feel for the town, the dust, and the general sadness (a little depressing actually regardless of the story line) the unusual characters. But the story just left me wanting to hurry and find a little more uplifting and enjoyable read, afterward. I was a little bummed.

I was puzzled by this book. Not the usual offering of Anne Tyler who usually makes me laugh. This is a slightly disturbing novel and I wasn't grabbed by it although I kept on reading for some strange reason. I didn't find the characters well developed or particularly believable though i felt they could/should have been. Not Ms Tyler's best novel, but readable. Just.

Great book

BoberMod
This is one of Anne Tyler's earlier novels, but it does not disappoint. If you have never read her earlier books, I would recommend this one. Her method of taking every day experiences and turning them into interesting situations is her strength.

Not Tyler's best. And this from a great fan of her writing.

Steamy Ibis
It is okay but not up to her later standard. The plot seemed somewhat contrived and unlikely in some places (when the grieving mother suddenly was past her grief and able to respond to her son's needs).

I am a big fan of Anne Tyler and have read most of her books and liked every one of them EXCEPT for "The Tin Can Tree". It was boring. Plain and simple.
