I'll bet the neighbours see me as an old maid and you as a sapless bachelor. Little do they know that there's more heat. What makes this story unique, however, is that Kevin and Maureen have been conducting an incestuous relationship for the past three years. With as much twists and turns as a remote Irish boreen, McGinley's novel explores the tragic consequences of a relationship like no other. Rate it .

i first read Patrick McGinley's FOGGAGE more than thirty years ago and have never forgotten it. In this dark study of animal lust and unbridled passion on an Irish farm, McGinley examines the sins of incest and adultery in his frank portrayal of forty year-old twin siblings Kevin and Maureen Fuller. Kevin is presented as a thinking farmer, an expert on "foggage," or winter grasses. Still a churchgoer, he dares to ponder the question of whether God created man or vice-versa. Nonetheless, the wages of sin soon come calling, claiming lives of those he loves. Maureen, on the other hand, is more natural and earthy, who simply wants what she wants. Throw in the more cultured, delicate beauty, Elizabeth, and the vulgar, grasping hired hand, Billy Snoddy, and you have a rich stew of a novel which questions the very nature of good and evil.

I have recently been reading the fine fiction of a young Irish writer, Donal Ryan, which caused me to recall FOGGAGE. I'm glad I went looking for this book again. It's long out-of-print, but was well worth another go-round. Shocking stuff to chew on here, but very highly recommended by this reader.

Although I am giving this five stars I want you to know that if you do decide to buy this book, you will remember it forever. It has an alarming incest scene that I didn't see coming. It's a solid piece but a bit plodding at times. I became well acquainted with the protagonist and had empathy for his situation though his sister was a bit wonky to understand.
