Anyone familiar with Kevin Sampson's uncompromising brand of lad-lit .

Anyone familiar with Kevin Sampson's uncompromising brand of lad-lit, epitomised by the bluntly titled Powder, Outlaws and Clubland, might be surprised to find that his seventh novel is a love story. Perhaps the three-word title is a sign of his going soft. More than a love story, this is a love letter from Sampson to the post-punk scene that, in Liverpool, coalesced around the legendary Eric's nightclub. This is the central image of the book, a symbol of youth ablaze, though you can't help feeling it burns so brightly thanks to the catalysing effects of nostalgia. Other writers tackling this era have done so with more satirical intentions, but Sampson, like Danny, is a romantic.

Fifteen-year-old Danny has just one dream: to be an artist. Living in Toxteth, with his mother and five sisters, Danny meets clever, politically aware Nicole and falls in love. But when Thatcher's government withdraws the Liverpool Art School's funding, Danny slides into apathy, robbing and drug dependency.

by Kevin Sampson (Author). A brilliant new novel about the impact of Thatcherism on a generation - by the author of AWAYDAYS and POWDER. It's when Sampson is detailing the violence of the Toxteth riots that his descriptive powers are really exercised. See all Product description.

From the author of the highly successful Awaydays and Powder: fifteen year-old Danny has just one dream: to be an artist and to go, like John Lennon before him, to Liverpool Art School. Then, in the autumn of 1980 the Art School’s funding is withdrawn. Danny slides into apathy, robbing and drug dependency.
