Hall's sketches of her native land bear a closer resemblance to the tales of Miss Mitford than to the Irish stories of Banim or Griffin. They contain fine rural descriptions, and are animated by a healthy tone of moral feeling and a vein of delicate humour. Her books were never popular in Ireland, as she saw in each party much to praise and much to blame, so that she failed to please either the Orangemen or the Roman Catholics.

Many of these acts are still, at least nominally, in force, both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

Many of these acts are still, at least nominally, in force, both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. As these two countries are legally separate, any amendment to or repeal of a law in one jurisdiction will have no effect on that law in the other. Individual Acts are identified below using either a description, the Act's long title, or by the short title given to the Act by subsequent legislation of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (to 1922) or either the Parliament of Northern Ireland or the Oireachtas. Note that the short titles enacted by the latter two are legally valid only within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

In 1800 the Act of Union was passed by both the Irish and British parliaments despite much opposition. Ruling Ireland direct from Westminster solved nothing. The union was a political expedient in wartime, solving none of the grievances in Ireland over land, religion or politics

In 1800 the Act of Union was passed by both the Irish and British parliaments despite much opposition. It was signed by George III in August 1800 to become effective on 1 January 1801. Pitt intended to follow the Act of Union with other, more far reaching reforms, including Catholic Emancipation, but was thwarted by George III, who refused to break his Coronation Oath to uphold the Anglican Church. The union was a political expedient in wartime, solving none of the grievances in Ireland over land, religion or politics. It had no social dimension at all. Ireland's economic problems were also ignored.

Aimed to overthrow the Act of Union and establish an Irish republic

Aimed to overthrow the Act of Union and establish an Irish republic. Emmet wanted to capture Dublin Castle, leading to a national revolution. An explosion at an arms dump a week before the planned revolt and conspirators' pamphlets which were seized by the British government gave Emmet's intentions away. When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then, and not till then let my epitaph be written. Upsurge of agrarian outrages and crime.
