Flight of the Intruder Paperback – October 1, 1987 . by. Stephen Coonts (Author). Coonts has always written great stuff, and this first of the "Grafton" novels is as close to Tom Clancy's writings as you're gonna find, I think. One of the essential reasons that Coonts does so well with these types of stories is the fact that he LIVED the life for quite some time - flying A-6 Intruders in the US Navy off of an aircraft carrier. Imma keep reading the series until it gets too over the top tho. I really like Jake and Callie and the gang, just wish I could say after the trilogy that I knew what the heck happened to them all!

The flight schedule was printed and shoved under the door of every crewman at least three, preferably four, hours before the first launch of the da. While the pilots cut up large charts and put together a smalll strip chart of the route which they'd carry in the cockpit, the bombardiers, applying the skill acquired through countless hours of practice, would sketch predictions of what they believed the target would look like on the radar screen, given the planned angle of approach and altitude.

Jake Grafton SeriesStephen Coonts. The Red Horseman, The Intruders. Flight of the Intruder" tells the story of Jake Grafton, a young naval aviator respected by his peers but slowly coming apart under the pressures of flying extremely hazardous yet useless missions over hostile territory in Vietnam. Though carrying more ordinance than any other carrier-based airplane, none of the A-6's weaponry is for defense, and no sidewinders or cannon-shells ever arm the plane).

Its hero, Jake Grafton, became a household name and the star of many more Coonts' bestsellers.

Written by Stephen Coonts, Audiobook narrated by Benjamin L. Darcie. The hero of six New York Times bestsellers by Stephen Coonts, author of Flight of the Intruder and Fortunes of War, returns as the United States and Cuba engage in a terrifying game of brinksmanship, a gamble that could break the last military taboo and destroy both countries. Very good book written by someone who's been there. No flashiness, no heroics, just a really good book about a carrier pilot during Vietnam. He tells how it was and explains a few things about the Intruder, carriers and carrier life along the way plus it's a great read. I give it 5 stars all the way.

So it stands to reason his "expertise" on the subject would flow naturally into the story line - which it does in spades! Also, one other thing to consider: Naval Institute Press is a HUGELY respected publishing house - they only publish "top-of-the-line" stories as well as non-fiction publications and books as well. If they had decided to publish Coonts' novel, then you KNOW - AUTOMATICALLY - that this is going to be one HELLUVA book!! And it is! Along with "Cannibal Queen" (a non-fiction look at Coonts & his [then] 14-yr. old son on an aerial odyssey across America in an old restored Boeing PT-17 Stearman Kaydet biplane), this is one of his VERY best works - bar none...!! If you've never read this book, you WON'T be disappointed...!!

Excellent story; my husband spent his career as an engineer supporting the A-6E Intruder as well as the F-14, F-8, A-7, P-3 and a few other aircraft. He enjoyed the read. He said that based on accounts related to him by flight crews during the 'Nam conflict, the adrenaline-filled scenarios and technical details were portrayed pretty accurately with good character development. He kept the interest throughout the story with totally believable characters and the duality of life for flight crews forced to play by political rules. Par for the course for Stephen Coonts' work!

So I read this series (the first 3) backwards. I must say that his writing definitely got better as it went along as far as style and character development. However. This book really left me, someone who read the following two within a few weeks of reading the first, feeling confused. The ending is horrible. Not in context, but in story telling. Not to spoil anything but they essentially ride off into the sunset and nothing is wrapped up. A zillion loose ends. And then we never really do find out what happened to the guys Jake was serving with. It’s briefly hinted at in the intruders from what I remember in the beginning but still. Gotta tie it all up. We sit through all this action and craziness to be left with nothing. No feeling of anything at the last page aside from what the hell just happened. He could of done a better job on the ending, and picked up closer in the intruders. Imma keep reading the series until it gets too over the top tho. I really like Jake and Callie and the gang, just wish I could say after the trilogy that I knew what the heck happened to them all!

Realistic
A close friend flew A6 's off carriers and said this is the closest description of what he experienced written - hence I read the book. Also helps that the author also flew A6's. LOVED IT! Great back story too, and pretty impossible to put down. I will not give it away since I will read it again.

I flew in VA-196 as a Bombadier/Navigator in 1969/70 aboard USS Ranger. Steve Coonts joined the squadron just after we returned from our cruise to Yankee Station so I only got to fly with him a couple of times. He gathered our squadron stories that spread over several combat cruises and molded them into an accurate fiction that made a good book and a bad movie. Reading the book years later, I could see and smell those years coming and going off the ship to deliver packages the recipients did not want. What is amazing to me, is that his writing had the same impact on civilians who had the same impressions when they read "Flight of the Intruder". It's a good read that I send to folks who ask me what I did once upon a time.

I liked the movie, but loved the book. The book adds drama and detail to a movie that was enjoyable, but not an academy award winner. I'll say nothing about the ending except, thank heavens the book and movie vary, adding an air of unpredictability. What a fascinating read. I felt like I was sitting in the cockpit as Jake Grafton felt his way through the skies trying to do his duty as best as he knew how. From the start, you can tell that Stephen Coonts was an A-6 driver. His perspectives add realism to the fictional character of Jake Grafton, leaving you wondering how much was fiction and how much was fact. I gained an a small understanding of what the navy life may be like for the men and women who sacrifice to serve our country. I recommend this book for anyone who likes to sit back, relax, visualize and read.

Flight of the Intruder centers on Jake Grafton who is a navy pilot flying the A-6 Intruder during the Vietnam War. The book also goes into the life of living aboard an aircraft-carrier during the war. I have read an earlier copy of the book before at least once. The book was falling apart slowly so I decided to get another copy of the book. The book mentions a few other naval planes (and sometimes their role) for instance the A-7 Corsair II, A-1 Skyraider (Sandy), F-4 Phantom II and the A-6B the SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) counter plane. Jake Grafton disobeys his orders and goes rouge for a little time, gets in trouble and is put back on duty, somewhat participates in Operation Linebacker I & II and is shot down and eventually is rescued. If you like reading about the Vietnam War this is the book for you. This is a fiction story. I intend to eventually get a few more books by the same author. P. Corti.
