Naval experts Allen and Polmar (who collaborated on the 1982 biography Rickover) barely make steam in this stodgy, well-worn thriller about a mythic Japanese treasure ship. In 1945, young Japanese banker Ishiwata Seno loads tons of gold into a freighter to keep Nippon's last resources from Allied hands-but the ship is sunk by an American sub. By 1979, Ishiwata has become one of the most powerful financiers in Japan, and wants to rent the CIA's famous salvage ship, the Glomar Explorer (which lifted a Russian sub off the floor of the Pacific in the early 70's) to raise the Osaka.

Thirty years after the torpedoing of a Japanese cargo ship secretly carrying tons of gold out of Japan, the commander of the aggressor U.S. submarine is murdered, and a race is on to recover the ship's treasure

A page turning adventure. Much more focused on the psychological than the "guts and glory" style. Historically accurate and plausible plot.

Xaluenk
Well written. A real "page turner." Interesting characters and an suspenseful story line. Who will get the gold?

Wow-- this was such a great book for a guy. Treasure buried at sea, a brilliant (or is he crazy?) treasure hunter, high-tech gambles to find a ship lost a hundred years ago and bring it in, a story about someone betting it all, spending millions of dollars of other people's money on a dream and-- get this-- it worked. Then they had to deal with the court system. Who's gold is it? Check out the book-- a beautiful read for a week at the beach.

Shezokha
This is a fast and lively read, full of all kinds of insights about the worlds of intelligence and defense. It moves.
