I decided to read this after watching the original film with Sinatra. The Kindle version has a forward by a book critic which is a little offputting.

I decided to read this after watching the original film with Sinatra. It appears that the critic was right about Condon's writing style. Condon, a former Hollywood publicist, must have written this with a dictionary and a thesaurus at hand. The use of obscure references and equally obscure adjectives are as profuse as rice at a wedding. Thankfully Kindle has a built-in dictionary although it appears that some of the words are just Condon.

His next book, The Manchurian Candidate, combined all the elements that defined his works for the next 30 years: nefarious conspiracies, satire, black humor, outrage at political and financial corruption in the American scene, breath-taking elements from thrillers and spy fiction, horrific and grotesque violence, and an obsession with the minutiae of food, drink, and fast living. Beginning with his first book, The Oldest Confession, Condon frequently prefaced his novels with excerpts of verse from a so-called Keener's Manual; these epigraphs foreshadowed the theme of the book or, in several instances, gave the book its title.

Richard Condon wrote The Manchurian Candidate 60 years ago. He also wrote the sourcebook for Prizzi’s . I bought the book mostly as a curiosity. He also wrote the sourcebook for Prizzi’s Honor and many other thrillers, but his political books touch on the paranoia, corruption, and sheer craziness of the Donald J. Trump er. The title, The Manchurian Candidate, invoked since Trump’s election by columnists and cable-news jesters of both left and right, had been echoing like an air-raid siren in my head for more than two years during the buildup to the Mueller report. I was expecting to encounter a dated pulp novel larded with camp, and I wasn’t entirely wrong.

THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is the fictional account of a far-from-ordinary G.I. who is brainwashed while held as a Korean POW. He returns to the United States as a programmed, remote-controlled killer. THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is a remarkable penetration of the human mind, its foibles and its ultimate malleability.

I could do nothing but love this book and give it no less than 5 stars. This book was published before I was born. The first movie made from it; directed by the great John Frankenheimer, was released before my first birthday. I had to wait until I was in my 20s to ever see it. And I instantly loved it. Yet I never thought to track down a copy of the book.

I found the book just wonderful and fascinating. It made me appreciate the two films that were adapted from it even more. While the story; American soldiers in the Korean conflict who are taken and brainwashed by a collective of Russian, Chinese and Korean 'brain washers' was shocking for its time, there are other subplots that would never make it past the Hayes Code of 1962 and even in 2016 are shocking.

The book's style is rather unique. It is a bit like the writing of the hard boiled detective novels if the author kept a thesaurus on their desk to drop in obscure and obsolete words and phrases. I was often using the dictionary function of my Kindle. There were even words that stumped the Kindle's dictionary. The book is manly. Most of the main characters are men or women who act like men of the time. Yet the author repeats the theme of the love of a 'good woman' as a redemptive cure for what ails you.

The other thing that I found amazing in this almost 60 year old book was that parts of it almost seemed to be ripped from the headlines of today. There is a Senator who is accusing everyone of working with the Russian Communists and who runs to the media to accuse all of his political enemies of this baseless charge.

The Manchurian Candidate was written in 1959 (I think) but it could well describe what happens today. The book takes a while to get started, but once it does, it moves quickly. One of the pleasing things about the movie of the same name made in 1962 with Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Harvey is that it follows the book quite closely. Usually when a movie is 'based' on a book, the only thing they have in common is the name. The book brings out the horror of what happened to the men of that patrol, and especially to the sgt. who was programed to kill on command and then have no memory of it. Although people have said that the book is supposed to be a political satire, there was little about it that I found satirical; rather, it was a chilling story of mind control. When Beb beats up the Korean houseboy who is actually an agent, you find yourself cheering him on. Payback of kind! I would recommend this book whether or not you subscribe to conspiracy theories or not.

The Manchurian Candidate, 1962. This classic black and white John Frankenheimer film of a Richard Condon political thriller of the same name has been described as eerie, shocking, daring, thrilling and mesmerizing, The sophisticated political thriller which was initially from the fertile brain of Condon, a man who really knew how to write them – who collaborated with Frankenheimer – a man who really knew how to direct them—in the writing of it. It also featured an all-star cast, including Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Henry Silva and Angela Lansbury in an Oscar®-nominated performance, plus a supporting company of well-known actors.

It opens in the early 1950s, on a captured platoon of American Korean War G.I.s that somehow ended up at an American ladies garden club party. Or did it? Major Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra), an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army who served valiantly as a captain in the Korean war, can' quite remember, but bits and pieces of the experience keep coming back to him in dreams, as they do to another member of the platoon. As Marco searches for answers, he discovers threads of a murderous Russo-Chinese plot orchestrated by and for the utterly ruthless Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin (Lansbury), involving her greatly damaged war hero son platoon sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey). And her senator husband John Yerkes Iselin (James Gregory), ranting about 57 Communists in the Army. (Older readers might remember Senator Joe McCarthy ranting about 57 Communists in the State Department.)

This chilling controversial film (Leonard Maltin), in which a former prisoner of war is brainwashed to create an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy may be the most sophisticated political satire ever made (Pauline Kael). It certainly continues to be only too relevant today. And what a farseeing genius Condon was. Strongly recommended.

When I was in high school, I bought the Denzel Washington remake of this from a flee market, because it was the first dvd case I'd ever seen without any summary or synopsis.
Completely blown away over 10 years ago by the 2004 remake, and craving for some nostalgia, I looked up this classic title, to see what the good ol' folks at Amazon Prime had of the old story.
Not only was I delighted to see they had the 2004 remake for free on Prime, but they also had this 1962 original film (1 year before Kennedy's assassination) for free on Prime as well; both apparently fantastic depictions of the 1959 book.
My favorite aspect about this 1964 version, that I don't remember from the 2004 version, is (no homo) the mind reversing power that love had on the sleeper, and the Romeo/Juliet vibe it took on.
I think there's a message in here somewhere, that talks about how men are tamable (yes, ma'am) from our default blunt, sometimes savage tendencies, by our biological drive to protect and serve our woman - which is naturally followed by family and community. Something, something, make America great again.

What used to be called "Brainwashing" is now known as "Mind Control". MKULTRA. It is highly perfected and in wide use in our world today. I never cared for Frank Sinatra, but he was fabulous in this telling of a very difficult to understand or believe topic. This is now. Wake up America! Wake up World and see what is being done to us!. This version is incredibly more powerful and explanatory than the later movie of the same name with Denzel Washington.
