The Gypsy's Curse book. Reading a Harry Crews book is like drinking rot-gut whiskey with an old friend who just got out of jail, but will no doubt be back in the slammer come sun-up. Only Crews could write a novel about freaks, gym rats and scumbags with such honesty and heart, make you laugh hard and then simmer in a sharp melancholia. You get a true sense that he cares for his characters and never does he piss on them just for the sake of it. Of course, cruel and savage things unfold.

Harry Crews was born in Alma, Georgia on June 7, 1935. His other works include Karate Is a Thing of the Spirit, Car, The Hawk Is Dying, The Gypsy's Curse, A Feast of Snakes, The Knockout Artist, Scar Lover, and Celebration. He served three years in the Marines then entered the University of Florida on the . He received a bachelor's degree in literature in 1960, followed by a master's in education. He taught at Broward Community College and wrote copy for Nelson Boswell's radio show Challenge the Response. He also wrote a memoir entitled A Childhood: The Biography of a Place. He died from complications of neuropathy on March 28, 2012 at the age of 76.

Read this book!

Well... only if you want to read a great story that has great characters. A bit dark, but if you can stomach a few malformed souls with tortured hearts, and a pension for the dramatic, you'll find a tale unlike any other. Laugh-out-loud funny. A true literary treasure.

This has got to be one of if not the strangest book I've read this side of Naked Lunch. The thing is, I couldn't put it down. I started reading it late Sunday afternoon and didn't stop until about 1 a.m. when I finished the last page. The author certainly has a way with words that kept me busy with my yellow marker.
To give an example or two of the earthy language with which Crews peppers this novel with lines such as:
"Two children, a little boy and a little girl, both of them under four and both wearing soiled while pants, came into the kitchen and sat on the floor beside a rat-colored hot water heater."
And: "Al's got most of his teeth. A few of the back ones have rotted out, but he's got pretty much a full mouth of teeth. He's so old though that they're dark, about the color of s*#t when you've been constipated three or four days."
Peopled with characters that would fit into a Circus freak show -- a former Navy wrestling champion who always refers to himself in the third person, a teenage boxer whose head has been scrambled already from vicious poundings, and, of course, the narrator and main character. Marvin Molar has tiny, useless legs, so he must walk on his hands. He's developed them to 20 inches around and performs for money doing such tricks as standing on one finger. The crew is rounded out by Pete, a black boxer in his 70s who is constantly reliving a fight with some long-ago opponent.
Surprisingly, or maybe not, this group of misfits have formed a family of sorts. When Hester, a well-endowed girl who, as Marvin puts it "has everything that's coming to her" in terms of body parts, enters the equation, however, all of their lives will change. For better and worse. Much, much worse.

I just had to put this line in, because about 10 minutes after finishing the book my mind said: "Did I read what I thought I read?"
"Hester looked steadily at me and smiled.
"I hit her in the smile with the hatchet."

Good stuff.

i didnt know what to expect from this book.at first i thought it would be a thriller/horror novel.i was half right/wrong.it was very thrilling.i felt bad laughing at some(MOST)of it.Mr Crews has an excellent flair with the trappings of southern culture,a very unique way of creating charactors.if the right director ever got his hands on this it would be the forrest gump on acid.maybe david lynch should read this.since i read this ive read all his other books and although they dont compare,they are still great reads.ok,''what the heck is this book about?'' you ask?im glad you did.its about.......hhhmmmmm,you can say its a love story of sorts.a group of people with 1 or more handicaps try and find a way to cope.the lead charactor has the gift of doing amazing stunts on his hands.he had to learn this because he has no use of his legs.he was born with non functioning legs and is a deaf mute.his parents leave him infront of a gym when he was 5 with a note attatched saying ''we caint take it''.and so if goes.i must reiterate that the other charactors in this novel are as involving as the main and that is where alot of the charm comes from.while the subject matter may not be humerous,Mr Crews leaves no choice but to laff dispite ourselves.

Obsession. I did not put it down, and still have not let it go. If you look you might catch an open space. Within is a chance meeting of masked insanity. Inside every person there is an edge where they tell no tales to anyone. There can be possible acceptance. This book holds a chamber into your own edge. Our prided, freakshow main character, who is the narrator, tells his accounts of the ignorances, hopes, and down fallings in a bright wasted world. Love historically continues to be the end of man. What can you do with a confession like this book? Find what you've been hiding behind stability.
