Her minimalist, elided style is like the quiet concentration of a bank robber trying to crack a safe. Doors spring open throughout this book, usually where we least expect them: I sit underneath the,/ what am I meant to be doing?/

Following her National Book Award-winning Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems, 1965-2003, Jean Valentine returns with a meditative and magical new collection. In Little Boat, Valentine continues her exploration of spiritual life, confronting the realities of aging and death in the serene and dreamlike voice so beloved by her many readers. Infusing even the most melancholy subjects with warmth and humanity, Little Boat explores such subjects as grief, ordinary objects, illness, and memory, carrying the reader into disparate worlds, rendering the complexity of our common experience through startling images. The poet's extraordinary juxtapositions blur the boundaries of the material world and the invisible, the given and the assumed, the present and the sometimes recently absent. Readers will find Valentine's quiet epiphanies on rich display here, as this much-heralded poet quietly merges the sorrowful and the sublime.

My small Poetry Book Club discussed Little Boat recently. Although none of us could claim to decipher the meaning of every poem, we all agreed we were enchanted and loved being lost in her brilliant yet hazy waters. I'm including here a poem I wrote on the train to NYC w/ a copy of the book in my lap ...

Best Lesson

You drift between
the poem
and snow banks
undulating …
is that it? …
past your speeding
window:

country
snow
suburban
snow,
the book,
its poem,
as steady
as the clatter lets
itbe
opened across
your lap’s
worn corduroy

one word
/ the next …
words
you had thought could not
surprise you …

all your life
you’ve tried
(not)
to be clever

at last
the city’s windows
skedaddle
past ….

snowless …
wordless …

I spent fifteen minutes trying to understand another reviewer's reaction to this wonderful series of poems, and I'm still not sure I know the author means: "Little Boat is a book of mystical minimalism, poems pacing the horizon between life and death. Valentine looks hard at our mortal gestures--and sees in them evidence of a radical, heretical, sacred benevolence."

But when I let this poem speak for itself, ah ... it seems to communicate all that needs to be said:

Day & night
in the little house
breath rising, falling
unreceived...
What did I love most in that house? What did you? I loved
the most the early summer mornings, lying, touching, in the
farmer's square bedroom, the window lightening on the left, the
south, the home-made bed,
the beach we had swum for, old, the dog
kissing us--

that makes perfect sense to me, and nothing I could add would make any difference at all.

Brightcaster
Jean Valentine is a poet of startling originality and imagination, and Little Boat takes the reader on a complex and moving exploration of life, death, belief, loss, and longing. As with all Valentine's work, it is not just what she includes with her gorgeous images and amazingly accurate and often wonderfully puzzling metaphors, but what she leaves out, that gives power to these poems. Even what is not stated is fully present in rich suggestion and allusion--an amazing book that will change a reader's way of thinking and writing.
