Home English Poets Ted Hughes. Bride and Groom Lie Hidden for Three Days. Examination at the Womb-Door.

Only 8 left in stock (more on the way). This volume collects a representative and handy group of poems by Ted Hughes, a must have if you like his work.

The Collected Poems spans fifty years of work, from Hawk in the Rain to the bestselling Birthday Letters. Ted Hughes is probably the greatest British post-WWII poet and possibly the best of the 20th Century. It also includes the complete texts of such seminal publications as Crow and Tales from Ovid as well as those children's poems that Hughes felt crossed over into adult poetry. He would have been significant if he had only ever produced his debut collection, The Hawk in the Rain, in which he rescued nature observation from the Romantics, bringing a post-Darwinian sensibility to foxes, horses, hawks, jaguars and more.

Edward James Hughes OM OBE FRSL (17 August 1930 – 28 October 1998) was an English poet, translator, and children's writer. Critics frequently rank him as one of the best poets of his generation, and one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. He served as Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. In 2008 The Times ranked Hughes fourth on their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".

Hughes' message throughout this poem is therefore one of warning and awareness surrounding theology being used in the wrong way and about the manipulation of Biblical fact and truth. The theme of nature can be split into two sub-sections: animals and natural elements.

The Collected Poems spans fifty years of work, from Hawk in the Rain to the best-selling Birthday Letters. Ted Hughes - former Poet Laureate and the winner of the Whitbread and Forward Prizes - here demonstrates his presiding importance in English and twentieth-century poetry. Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children, including The Iron Man (1968). He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for both Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998).

Ted Hughes and a Summary of Thistles. Thistles is a short poem that focuses on the qualities of the thistle.

From his remarkable debut The Hawk in the Rain (1957) to his death in 1998, Ted Hughes was a colossal presence in the English literary landscape. This edition collects for the first time his poetry of five decades, including such characteristic achievements as Crow, Tales from Ovid and Birthday Letters. It also charts the parallel but less familiar story of Hughes's private-press publications: a manifold activity ranging from broadsides and pamphlets to entire collections of poems, many of which have not previously circulated beyond their original readership.

The Collected Poems reprints the ensemble of the published poetry, including those poems written 'within hearing' of children which Hughes marked out for a separate adult readership, and the nearly two hundred uncollected poems which he published in periodicals but never reprinted. The various lives of the poetry are here integrated within a single chronology, and the notes give evidence of their interconnection, and of the extent to which revision was integral to this complex and copious body of work.

'A guardian spirit of the land and language.' Seamus Heaney

Pure genius.

Love the book. Received it in a timely manner. Great experience!

It’s depressing to see one of the most magnificent poets of the century printed on the sort of paper usually associated with airport thrillers. This is *not* by any means $28.00 worth of book. I know the general standard for these things has slackened somewhat. But this is a maddening and pitiful printing job, entirely unequal to the luminous poems on offer.

Porgisk
one of the top 3 great post war english poets

Especially the poems with a more formal structure and cadence...

A brilliant find! Hughes is now a regular part of our poetry regimen and a welcome addition to our lives.

Well worth owning!

I gave up on Hughes about halfway through this huge assembly of his poems--not because he's untalented, but the darkness of his vision was beginning to depress me. Having read and taught Sylvia Plath's poems, I can understand why so much suicide surrounded these gifted individuals. Unlike Seamus Heaney's poetry, or even Yeats's for example, Hughes focuses almost exclusively on the latent violence in nature and the futility inherent in the human condition.
