An Essay on Man. Moral essays and satires. The first design of the Essay on Man arranged it into four books, each consisting of a distinct group of Epistles.

An Essay on Man. Pope's life as a writer falls into three periods, answering fairly enough to the three reigns in which he worked. Under Queen Anne he was an original poet, but made little money by his verses; under George I. he was chiefly a translator, and made much money by satisfying the French-classical taste with versions of the "Iliad" and "Odyssey. The First Book, in four Epistles, was to treat of man in the abstract, and of his relation to the Universe.

Alexander Pope early grew acquainted with former members of John Dryden’s circle, notably William Wycherley, William Walsh, and Henry Cromwell. This early emergence of a man of letters may have been assisted by Pope’s poor physique. As a result of too much study, so he thought, he acquired a curvature of the spine and some tubercular infection, probably Pott’s disease, that limited his growth and seriously impaired his health. His full-grown height was 4 feet 6 inches (. metres), but the grace of his profile and fullness of his eye gave him an attractive appearance.

The various components of An Essay On Man appeared scattered through the years 1732-1734. Together, they constituted only the first part of a much larger project, one which Pope's lifelong poor health did not permit to be realized. I’ve never read Pope, and I think I started with the wrong book. I’d only recommend this to people with a fervid interest in 17th and 18th century European philosophy. Or those who like trite aphorisms that haven’t really been thought through.

An Essay on Man is a poem published by Alexander Pope in 1733–1734. It is an effort to rationalize or rather "vindicate the ways of God to man" (. 6), a variation of John Milton's claim in the opening lines of Paradise Lost, that he will "justify the ways of God to men" (. 6).
