Living Must Bury is a powerhouse, a slaughterhouse, a cathouse-oracle of a first book. Josie Sigler's incantatory poems build in yawps of collage that carve out the shape of her poems' heart-puncturing hurt.
Living Must Bury is a powerhouse, a slaughterhouse, a cathouse-oracle of a first book. Alex Lemon What strange.
Living Must Bury book. Gotta say that I loved the "Contents" in this book. What is usually a list of titles and page numbers, Sigler weaves into a whopper of a poem
Living Must Bury book. What is usually a list of titles and page numbers, Sigler weaves into a whopper of a poem. I'm a sucker for prayerish poems and "Contents" was one of the best I've read to date. -Alex Lemon "What strange, archaic, 3-D prayer is this? A lucid palimpsest showing us where the gold is buried.

Sigler is the recipient of Fence Books’s 2010 Motherwell Prize, awarded to a first or second collection of poems written in English by a woman. To set the stage for these complicated emotions, Sigler looks to relationships with family and neighbors. Her words carry the weight of events that happen across the globe, like her mother’s awakening in 1975 pressed against the invasion of East Timor that same year. For Sigler, life’s more full of melancholic endings than new beginnings.
Her book of poetry, living must bury, winner of the 2010 Motherwell Prize, was published by Fence Books. Sigler’s very short story, The Compartment, won the 2012 Barthelme Prize. Other work has appeared in journals such as Story Quarterly, Prism International, Fugue, Water-Stone, Hunger Mountain, and Redivider. Sigler was awarded a 2011 PEN Northwest Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Residency, which afforded her the opportunity live on a remote homestead near the Rogue River in southern Oregon, as well as a Sitka Center for Art and Ecology Residency.
