The Blue Road' is one of his "way-books" - a series of essays, sketches and poems - about a trip he made to Labrador in North-Eastern Canada. The drive behind much of his writing and thinking is to move out from the 'fuzz' of the West and into a clearer, more elemental space of being. Much of this space is symbolised by the idea of the North, which 'The Blue Road' is essentially about. In the preface to 'The Blue Road', Kenneth White writes: "So what's a 'blue road'? Kenneth White is a Scottish poet, academic and writer. White obtained a double first in French and German from the University of Glasgow. From 1959 until 1963, White studied at the University of Paris, where he obtained a state doctorate. Kenneth White was born in the Gorbals in Glasgow on 28 April 1936 and grew up in Fairlie on the Ayrshire coast .
Kenneth White was born in the Gorbals in Glasgow on 28 April 1936 and grew up in Fairlie on the Ayrshire coast, where his father worked as a railway signalman. He was educated in Fairlie, Largs and Ardrossan. On a trip along the north bank of the St Lawrence into Labrador, which formed the basis for his book The Blue Road, he came up with the concept of ‘geopoetics’ as a way of experiencing the world, expressing it creatively in a variety of different ways and promoting radical cultural renewal. In 1983 he left the Pyrenees to live in a farmhouse near Trébeurden on the north coast of Brittany and was appointed Professor of Twentieth Century Poetics at the Sorbonne.
