This collection of Shann Ray's stories portrays the bittersweet nature of family life

This collection of Shann Ray's stories portrays the bittersweet nature of family life. American Masculine" is an earnest debut volume concerning the hardscrabble American West - a book in the vein of Annie Proulx's "Close Range," or even "Rock Springs," if Richard Ford had had a more poignant bent. There is a good deal here to admire, not least of which is the craftsmanship of some of the finer stories. Ray's narratives often proceed in a nonlinear, mosaic fashion, a structure that at its best has the effect of galvanizing a story's scenes into genuine emotion.

American Masculine book. Of what I've read, Shann Ray's American Masculine is certainly the best. Winner of the 2010 Bakeless Prize for Fiction, a muscular debut. While I'm not well-versed enough in contemporary American short stories, what I have read leads me to believe that realistic short story writers are still emulating Raymond Carver; that is to say, that a hyper-minimalist style is often used. The less said, the better. Alas, most of these authors aren't Raymond I've been reading a lot of short story collections lately, with an eye out, specifically, for newer collections.

Shann Ray writes about small western towns and their residents in tough, poetic, and beautiful ways. American Masculine is a powerful fiction debut. These ten stories reveal Shann Ray's unique voice, his lyrical vision of the West, and his always-eloquent contemplation of the mysteries of grace and forgiveness. Jess Walter, National Book Award finalist for The Zero. Written in prose both fierce and elegant, American Masculine is a commanding debut.

AMERICAN MASCULINE is Ray's first book of fiction and it's already won a prize or two, and I can see wh. ay's stories are set in the modern American West, mostly in Montana or Washington state and he manages to be equally adept at conveying both the depth and width of Montana's colorful big sky country and the claustrophobic.

As Evelynne Lowry, the daughter of a copper baron, comes of age in early 20th century Montana, the lives of horses dovetail with the lives of people and her own quest for womanhood becomes inextricably intertwined with the future of two men who face nearly insurmountable losses-a lonely bull rider named Zion from the Montana highline, and a Cheyenne team roper. named William Black Kettle, the descendant of peace chiefs. The American West has long been a place where myth and legend have flourished. That was seventeen years ago; Devin hadn’t been back to Montana since. Then his father called from Bozeman. Why don’t you come up and stay awhile? he said. No desire, said Devin. No desire, said Devin rty where Devin was, nine thirty in Montana. From the chrome chair beside his bed Devin stared at the city again, out over the bank of lights and the blending they went through as the night took shape. He said what he said, then was quiet. Devin had left in the off-white Vega on three semibald tires and one whitewall, two retreads in the trunk for spares.

The American Book Awards were created to provide recognition for outstanding literary achievement from the entire spectrum of America's diverse literary community. The purpose of the awards is to recognize literary excellence without limitations or restrictions. Sherman Alexie called it "tough, poetic, and beautiful" and Dave Eggers called it "lyrical, prophetic, and brutal, yet ultimately hopeful. One example is from the story "The Miracles of Vincent van Gogh" in which he takes on the character of men caught in the crucible created by national recession, by the need to borrow, and by the reality of culpability.

A gorgeous and thought provoking collection about gender roles in modern society, encompassing marriage, love, adultery, responsibility and heartbreak. And somehow, beautifully, in this somewhat harsh world, there is an echo of forgiveness.
Don't miss Shann Ray's story, "Mrs. Secrest," one of the most perfect short stories I have ever read.
A very talented, big-thinking, generous writer-- definitely someone to watch.

Don't expect comic relief in these stories. For the most part they make something like Grapes of Wrath or Angela's Ashes look downright light hearted. But they are told with poetic sympathy and grace that smooths the hard edges. I like the way Ray changes the tempo to match the physical and emotional moment. He is an inventive writer using mostly common words with new group meanings rather than keeping the reader thumbing through the dictionary. He draws well on subjects he knows best-reservation life, animals, and earthy and flawed people as they try to learn to forgive and accept forgiveness. It's the most spell-binding book I've read in sometime.

But not just Montanans. Shann's writing is emotionally charged for anyone who grew up in dysfunction, anywhere. As a contemporary in age and geography and familial background, it was especially poignant for me; but his winning of the Bakeless prize was no coincidence and the judge recognized the universal themes running through all the stories. They are filled with Intensity, and a longing for meaning, love and hope that will resonate with all readers. Great Book!

This is a collection of stories about life from the perspective of a moden day Native American. The stories are do not have pleasant endings as one might hope, but I believe they are reflective of the trials that Native American's face as they try to maintain their unique culture and live in today's America at the same time.

Haven't finished yet. Writing superb. VERY dark. Can only take a little at a time.

Great Book!

IWAS
Very dark stories about the complexity of human life set in the west.

As a native to MT, I understand the plight of the natives but this book is dark dark dark and the reviews and previews describing it are inaccurate...this has little to do with masculinity but rather the emasculation of the Native American male from drugs, alcohol, incest and loss of culture but does it in a bleak and sordid fashion.
