Anne Bishop’s Twilight’s Dawn is a collection of four stories that all take place within her Black Jewels world. Each one states where in the timespan of the other books it falls.

Winsol Gifts Takes place after Tangled Webs: It’s a winter holiday with gift traditions, and in the expansive (and wealthy) SaDiablo family such things can be tricky.

Shades of Honor Takes place before The Shadow Queen: Lucivar’s Eyrien second-in-command, Falonar, has decided that he’s too good to serve a half-breed like Lucivar.

Family Takes place “10 Years Later”: Sylvia and her two children (Mikal and Beron) have been lured into a trap by a man called “No Face” who kidnaps children and kills them horribly.

The High Lord’s Daughter Takes place decades later: Jaenelle was born from one of the short-lived races; Daemon always knew she would die long before he would. She made him promise to mourn for a year and then return to life--it's time.

I teared up repeatedly while reading these tales; the final one in particular made me sniffle quite a lot. “Family” both brought me to tears and made me tense as hell as the events unfolded. I absolutely love this installment in the Black Jewels world, and having the four stories enables Ms. Bishop to fill in the blanks here and there. It’s perfect.

First of all, I would like to commend the writer for her last chapter in this novel, the High Lord's Daughter. It is not often you see a writer who can reinvent the story and give it a new life. Most series tend to get bogged down by repetition because they keep recycling the same stories with the same characters over and over again until it becomes necessary to end them altogether. What Bishop did here makes it possible to watch a completely new story emerge from the ashes of the old center characters that have been reshuffled and reinvented. I am truly hoping that this is not the end, as I would like to see what Daemonar and all the young people will become and what world they will bring. It gives the writer a chance to return to the universe she has built and start fresh.

Now onto the ending, which I am sure has upset some people.... Possibility of SPOILERS abounds...

One of the most fundamental things about life is continuity. Life flows, like a river. It cannot be a house that get dilapidated and condemned due to time and wear and tear. I love that Bishop has shown us in her last story one of the fundamentals of life - that no matter how deeply we may have loved, and how that love will stay with us forever, it doesn't mean we can never love again. Psychologists say that people who have loved in the past have a greater chance to fall in love again, no matter how deeply they have mourned. And it is love itself that changes us. Even if those we love stay in our life but for a short time, every one of them teaches us how to love deeper and with more complexity. We in the end always come out enriched. If anything, I am disappointed that the writer had to give Deamon a crutch to get this by providing him with a new partner who loved and cared for his former.

I have followed this series from its beginning, and I understand the line that it had taken, that Deamon has waited for Janelle for generations, that she is his soulmate, his Queen, the Witch. But for me, it is because of that that I had a hard time relating to their love. There were too many "musts" and "had to" in it to make it a true fall, if you will. Something that predetermined, that a Warlord Prince has to react to, that he has waited for, that is inevitable... Is not romantic to me. Romantic to me is when to people make the choice to love when there is no such nooses tied around their throats. Romantic is when you love, because you love each other for who you are, who you see before you, without that many hang ups. I like the fact that for Surreal and Daemon, what begun their love were their own wishes, yes, but also no plan for it. It was passion, pure desire, pure wish for each other, the two people they have known for centuries. I like the idea that this passion was not a pre-planned script; it was a stew that has been slowly simmering on the stove for centuries, waiting to boil over. A love that is left to brood and cook, waiting and growing in the dark for ages, until it's finally ready to develop, such love has a power of its own. I think one of my regrets and disappointments for this last chapter is that the author concentrated on their child and didn't let this love grow, show that growth. I would have liked to see that... I wrote this to a friend of mine, but I will repeat it - a love that take s while to grow is like a woman that is coaxed and teased for hours, and left begging for release.... It is deep, and enriching and delicious...

I know I heard that it has been promised that this is the last book, but I hope the author will change her mind. This new life she has painted is much too beautiful and full of promise to be left unspoken for.

Honestly, with a world as beautiful as Bishop's Black Jewels your heart hurts with the idea of an ending, ANY ending, because you want it to go on forever. But after years of wondering how so many of these stories would wind down, and years of wondering if we'd ever get to find out, I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to end it. I absolutely cried the last 25% and loved every moment of it. Still my favorite series ever, forever, and I'm going to reread them all again now. I'm not sure if Bishop reads reviews, but to her - Thank you for this.

*** SPOILER ALERT *** Ok. This book is really hard to rate. I've absolutely loved the majority of the Black Jewels series books and I greatly enjoyed the first three stories in this book...but the last...oh the last. The last broke my heart.

I've always believed - and still do - that an author has the right to write a book and/or series anyway he or she wants to. It's her series and her vision, after all. But I wish she hadn't written this one - or at least I wish I had not read it. I hated hated hated the last story.

SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!

How could she kill Jaenelle & Satean off? HOW??? Those two absolutely made this series. Obviously she is done with this series but still. I wish it had not ended this way. I wish I could UNREAD it!!! If she was tired of writing these books and wanted to concentrate on something else, I wish she would have just done that and NOT wrote this book. It would have been better to end this series after any of the previous books but NOT have done this. I just can't get over it. The characters acted in ways that went completely against the people that they had always been. This just did not ring true. I actually really did like the character of Surreal but not with Daemon. She should have had her own love. She deserved that. This series should have ended before either Jaenelle or Satean died. There was no reason why Jaenelle & Daemon should not have had their happily ever after. Jaenelle was Witch. Being Witch could have easily explained Jaenelle living much longer than normal humans.

I read my first book from the Black Jewels series years ago and have been re-reading them ever since, and each reading is just as enjoyable as the first. These stories never lose their shine. Bishop carries you away to a world you can happily get lost in, full of characters you love to spend time with. My only complaint is that there aren't enough books to keep me reading new material every single day.
