Now Lottie pictures Elizabeth, the woman he’s in love with. Lottie knows this about her: that she’s just called Cameron. She’s told him she’s not coming over this evening, as they have planned.

For Love tells the story of Lottie Gardner, her brother Cameron, and their childhood friend Elizabeth, who all come together one summer in their hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts, after years of separation. Several of her books have been adapted into movies including The Good Mother (1988), which was directed by Leonard Nimoy and starred Diane Keaton and Liam Neeson; Family Pictures (1993), which starred Anjelica Houston and Sam Neill; and Inventing the Abbotts (1997), which starred Liv Tyler.

With insight and intelligence, Sue Miller explores the intricates of family and loveLottie Gardner, her brother, Cameron, and their childhood friend Elizabeth have all come together in their hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts, after years of separation. Lottie is barraged with memories of the past as she packs up her mother's house and witnesses the rekindling of an old romance between Cameron and Elizabeth. When a senseless tragedy intrudes upon them, Lottie is forced to examine the consequences of what she has done for love.

She’d arrive sometime after breakfast – Lottie would hear her on the porch, her light, quick step – and then she’d knock at the open front door, call, and come in as far as the empty hall.

She’d arrive sometime after breakfast – Lottie would hear her on the porch, her light, quick step – and then she’d knock at the open front door, call, and come in as far as the empty hall rst time she came, she seemed almost shy, hesitant; and Lottie contributed to the awkwardness since she couldn’t figure out why Elizabeth was there, standing with her hands on her hips, surveying the work Ryan and Lottie were doing as though she were the contractor in charge of the project.

Then come the shocking charges that would threaten her new love, her new "family".

Recently divorced, Anna Dunlap has two passionate attachments: her daughter, four-year-old Molly, and her lover, Leo, the man who makes her feel beautiful - and sexual - for the first time. Swept away by happiness and passion, Anna feels she has everything she's ever wanted. Then come the shocking charges that would threaten her new love, her new "family". that force her to prove she is a good mother.

For Love - Sue Miller. More than once, Jack had said he loved her mouth. He’d told her he could sit across from her forever and watch her lips shape the words as she spoke. She remembered how he’d looked when she’d driven away to come here to her mother’s house, standing in the dappled sun of the driveway with his old dog.

Three childhood chums reunite after years of separation and, when tragedy strikes, they must face their pasts

If there were enough Sue Miller books so that I could read a new one every week, I would read nothing but Sue Miller books forever!
Her characters feel so real to me, their lives so eminently plausible. She has a wonderful understanding, I think, of the human condition and how we relate to each other and the world. Her writing is so smart.
I loved Lottie, the main character, and I understood what made her tick. I've known people like Elizabeth, like Cam, like Jack. They are written so well, so genuinely. This is a story of family, love, regret, remorse, guilt, and much more. You will like it if you are a person that explores feelings, emotions, situations, personalities, and motives. If you like to explore relationships and motivations.
So in case you haven't guessed, I recommend this book. I loved it.

I'm working my way through all of Sue Miller's novels. Each has been an excellent read, and the subject matter is quite varied and each story unique. She writes about relationships, attitudes, regrets, mistakes. Her characters are alive and recognizable. She's an extraordinary storyteller and creates situations that are believable and striking. Few current serious novelists do it better. ,

Well-written (I like Sue Miller's novels) but this one just beat the subject to death and went on and on and on. I almost didn't finish it, but I did, only to find the ending less than satisfactory. I liked "The Good Mother" much better.

Basically 339 pages that say nothing of value. A story about "LOVE" which Lottie is to write but can't and in the end doesn't. Though love isn't just a feeling--one has to work at it--is stated in the book, it is not backed up by the details touched on by the many characters in the story.

This one was tough to struggle through in order to finish reading.

Although Sue Miller is one of my favorite authors, I felt like I had to pulps my way through this novel. None of the characters were likeable and the story line was boring.

White gold
I enjoyed this novel very much, as I have with all Sue Miller's works, including her memoir.

Gavikelv
I love Sue Millers novels and this one did not disappoint. She captures the small and subtle interactions , expressions and complications of relationships, between lovers, family members, friends.

this is my 4th sue miller book and it is my favorite. the main character is a flawed and complicated woman struggling to be in a committed relationship despite her fiercely independant nature. the story runs backwards in time which is really well done. it is an interesting look into people's inner worlds and how they define love.
