A shocking novel of adolescent anger and social disorder. Dragged from the influences he so enjoyed in London, a young boy spies on his sister and father sharing an intimate bath. As his obsession with their relationship grows, so does the need to end it in whatever manner necessary.
As others have already said, this is a beautifully-written novel about a difficult subject. A lesser writer may have felt the need to either spoon-feed or lecture, and Alexander Stuart wisely does neither. He is more interested in the interior life of this story, in the way abuse corrodes and destroys, and this makes "The War Zone" even more challenging than it might have been otherwise. I will admit to having mixed feelings on the final act. Without giving anything away, I couldn't decide if it was inevitable and accurate, or unnecessary wish fulfillment. I'm sure Stuart was hoping for the first, but I'm not so sure.

As an aside, the book makes a fascinating companion piece to the film of the same name, screenplay by Stuart, brilliantly directed by Tim Roth. Rather than a straight-ahead retelling of this story, the film takes a more punishing tone and (perhaps for the best) ends on a different note. Taken together, they both feel oddly essential, neither one negating the other. This isn't a clear case where the book is better than the movie, or vice versa. Both are very good, but not always for the same reasons.

I've been careful to rate the novel itself in this review, hence the four-star rating. If I were rating the Kindle edition, however, it would get a single star, and less than that if I could. This is, without a doubt, the single worst e-book I've ever encountered. Paragraph spacing is erratic, words and single letters take up entire lines... It's a mess, plain and simple, and it distracts from the reading experience. The fact that it is so bad, and has yet to be improved, is kind of remarkable. If you do read "The War Zone," buy the physical book, or find it at a library. Avoid the Kindle edition at all costs.

The political rant in the introduction where the author felt the need to climb on his soapbox to comment about Ronald Reagan and Dick Cheney took me out of the story before I even started reading it. Other than that I enjoyed the book and had trouble putting it down. I was hoping that the book would fill in one of the plot holes from the movie, but that particular scene in the book was radically different from what I saw in the film version. The novel explores what happened to the brother and sister after the climax of the film adaption.

Despicable, dark, but I couldn't put it down. There was something much more to this story than indulging in taboos for the shock value alone - thoughtfully written and heart-breaking - I also saw the movie and while it didn't follow quite exactly - it was compelling, and beautifully acted. Worth your time - you won't forget ever reading this.

This is not your father's "war zone". Rather, it is a story of an incestuous relationship and the gritty impact of a family's relocation from London to the countryside. It is well written and worth the read, if you can stand the dark side of life. The movie, with Tilda Swinton playing the clueless mother is quite good as well.

Superb book! I highly recommend it.

Skunk Black
It's very well written. A very strange young woman. I wonder about the background. I wonder what inspired this writer.

See above. Protrays family dynamics in a dysfunctional family very effectively. The ending leaves one guessing what actually happaned to the relationship between brother and sister.

The move was very good.
