The helicopter banked as he veered to change course. The surface snow around them stirred under the effects of the spinning props, and whiteness whirled away from the chopper until there was nothing but the solid snow base under the landing gear. Robyn waited while the pilot trotted around to open her door. She helped unhook her skis from the landing blades while he removed the rest of her gear from the backseat and dropped it on the snow beside them.

Loose snow flew around the large metal-clad building they used as a hangar for both the chopper and the small bush plane. There wasn’t much time left and he had a ton of preparations to complete before the afternoon flight. The money was great but the timing sucked. As he hurried through his checklist his mind wandered, concern for his sister distracting him. What the hell was.

Lost Python
So August 3rd is the print release of Vivian Arend's first two shorts in her Granite Lake Wolves series. I was delighted to read these two novellas: especially since I've been meaning to read something by Vivian for a while (read: I was dying to check out STORMCHILD (review to come!) after reading an excerpt about it). Suffice to say, I was not disappointed with these stories.

There's not as much emphasis on wolfy interactions like in other books. Well, I suppose that's somewhat misleading. Let me explain: there's plenty of wolf politics. In fact, there are two showdowns by the end of WOLF SIGNS and WOLF FLIGHT betwixt the heroes, heroines, and the bad guys. But wolf mannerisms, such as nuzzling, or playing in wolf form (ie: tackling each other in the snow), etc are briefly mentioned. They happen, but it's simply an event that occurs briefly and then everyone moves on. I hope that makes sense.

If you're a fan of that kind of wolfy interaction, these two novellas might not be your favorites out of all the werewolf books out there. Nevertheless, the interactions are there... Vivian simply chooses to focus more on the human aspects of the relationship instead. Which, by the way, makes sense for both stories.

How so? Well, there's a brother and sister. Robyn is deaf and was separated from her mother shortly after she was born. Tad's a halfling: half werewolf, half human. Neither can transform into their wolves until they are exposed to a certain chemical--one that they would have either received as babies from their mother's milk, or, from sex. Humans cannot trigger the transformation--only werewolves can. So really, both of these short stories focus less on the wolf interactions because the hero and heroine cannot transform. Which, I'm surprised to say (because I love me some wolf mannerisms), is actually okay! ...but only for these two stories. And only because of the circumstances.

One interesting feature that I haven't seen and that I absolutely enjoyed was the mind reading between mates. It was perfect for Robyn. I'm actually somewhat jealous of her. What would it be like to suddenly hear a voice for the first time in your entire life? And inside your head, no less? Well, maybe I'm just jealous of the mind reading. I wouldn't want to be deaf.

Robyn's mate, Keil, was a hunk-tastic alpha male. And boy let me tell you I missed my beloved alphas (what with the binging on YAs recently). If I had to compare him, I would say he's much like Adam in the Mercy Thompson series. He's protective. He's caring. He's tough around everyone but his mate. He does everything within his power to make sure she's okay. Unlike Adam, however, Keil believes he should keep an important secret from Robyn initially. Which, of course, does not last when Robyn reads his lips as he discusses the situation with his brother.

In WOLF FLIGHT, Tad and Missy are more like high school sweethearts--whereas, in WOLF SIGNS, Robyn and Keil meet for the first time. They've both had a crush on each other for ages, but Missy ended up being forced into a marriage with her current, corrupt alpha's brother. She's miserable. When she attempts to flee, she ends up seeing Tad again at her new work site.

I wasn't too crazy about how Tad and Missy ended up being the same. Maybe it's because it's stated that Omegas are rare. To suddenly have two--and then have them as mates--just seemed kind of weird. But I get where Vivian was going when she wrote it. It just didn't work for me. Same as having Robyn as an Alpha also.

Overall, both of these novellas are great werewolf stories. They were short, sweet, romantic, and I felt the love. I also--which I think is the most important aspect when it comes to novellas--did not feel like the story was rushed. I was satisfied by the end with those HEAs. Mission accomplished, Vivian!

If you like werewolves, you'll probably enjoy UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS. If you love romance, you definitely will enjoy these books!

in waiting
Book 1 in the Granite Lake Wolves series by Vivian Arend is an incredible read. I greatly enjoyed this book and its predecessor. Like many of Arend's other books it is a fast read and irresistible. I could not put the book down.
