PART THREE of a serialised novel - a charming and romantic story about living the simple life and the joy of animals. Emma Nightingale finds she's accidentally becoming something of a local celebrity in the small town of Crickleford, and it seems that everyone wants her to look after their pets. Life in Crickleford is quiet and peaceful, but it won't be for long if people discover the truth about Emma's past. Heartfelt, moving, and inspiring, a Christmas book perfect for fans of A Street Cat Named Bob. Oliver the cat is a timid little thing, who rarely ventures from his home in the Foresters' Arms. In the 1880s many people in upper- and middle-class society were unaware of the dangerous conditions in the slums among poor immigrants. Also, a wave of unskilled southern European, eastern European, Asian, and Jewish immigrants came to settle in the "promised land" of the United States

At first, I really liked Beth. I thought she was a "straight shooter, gets stuff down, tells the truth" sort of girl. I liked how she made it very clear to Fay that she wouldn't tolerate Fay using her as cover and cut things off with her. She was mostly amusing, reading about her life and the lives of the people she cleaned houses for...and I thought I was in the midst of a great story.

But then around 60% my opinion of Beth dropped. She then turns around and starts engaging in behavior similar to Fay (the same reasons why she cut ties with her best friend)...so that makes her what? A hypocrite? By 70% I came to the conclusion that neither Beth nor Fay believed in the sanctity of marriage vows, not caring who they were hurting as long as they were happy. Who cares that Simon was devastated? So instead, the author decides to turn him into an unfeeling, uncaring jerk for leaving, then a doormat for coming back. I mean, I guess it was his own fault that he was ten years older than Fay and was boring. Serves him right! < / sarcasm> Too bad. He was my favorite character in the whole book.
Don't even get me started on Sarah and Alex. The situation between them and Beth was so ridiculous and unbelievable, I skimmed to the end. So apparently the moral of this story is, you can cheat on your partner, treat the people in your life you profess to 'love' like **** because in the end, who cares who you hurt as long as you're happy.

If these are the sorts of characters this author writes about, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever or feelings or remorse for the hurt they caused, I'm not interested in reading anything else from her. I honestly regret reading this one now.

very light enjkyable read based on everyday hsppenings. had the normal sting in the tail twist and turns
a good read inbetween a heavy novel
