Hesh Kestin’s Based on a True Story was a Kansas City Star Top Ten Book of 2008.

Hesh Kestin’s Based on a True Story was a Kansas City Star Top Ten Book of 2008. Jewish gangsters in 1960s New York City. A fast-paced, funny look at a time when America still seemed young and moving forward. The long and short of The Iron Will of Shoeshine Cats is that Russy comes to discover the hitherto inexplicable reasoning behind his calling to organized crime as the story progresses, and in the meantime discovers himself, all against a masterfully drawn background of an America in the throes of its own growing pains. I could vastly over-simplify by categorizing The Iron Will of Shoeshine Cats as a coming-of-age story, but it’s so much more. A smart young man is mentored by the gangster of his time. And there was a fire. The fireplace was lit. I had never even considered it might be real. I had never even considered it might be real course, with logs stacked similarly in a creche beside it. But I never considered either might actually function. I was a city boy. I had read about fires in fireplaces, but never seen one. Or smelled one. The deeply masculine aroma carried with it a lighter one, sensual, musky. It was perfume, lavender, citrus, adult.

"From the author of the short fiction collection Based on a True Story comes a vibrant, hilarious addition to the genre of mob tragicomedy. Twenty-year-old Russell Newhouse, a quick-witted scholar and skirt-chaser, has New York’s organized crime scene thrust upon him by a man called Shushan “Shoeshine” Cats, who interrupts a meeting of a Brooklyn Jewish men’s society where Russell is serving as secretary. Shushan is in need of a favor and promptly takes Russell under his wing. What ensues is a classic boy-meets-mob story: part noir, part comedy, part epic. Kestin’s richly layered characters—a monstrously obese German organized crime attorney named Frit von Zeppelin, a Jewish Texan who speaks in malapropisms, a dentist who anglicizes or Yiddishizes his name depending on his mood—are straight out of Dickens; his vivid attention to the details of place, New York, and time, 1963, is like poetic journalism; and his snappy, concise prose and dialogue is on par with Raymond Chandler. Kestin zips through Russell’s sexual trysts, dealings in back rooms of Little Italy restaurants, and encounters with historical events like the JFK assassination with unflagging humor and insight." Here's the basic plot: A young man's father dies and he is taken in as the protégé of a very tough and very feared gangster.
Hesh Kestin is a truly remarkable writer. You can "hear: the conversation of the various ethnic gangsters: Jewish, Black, Asian, Italian and see them as they negotiate issues. You discover the truth of the gangster's interest in the protagonist right along with the protagonist. It's as if you are not reading the book but are there in the story, invisible, right along with the other characters.
That makes Mr. Kestin's work absolutely magical. There is philosophy behind the story but it is revealed through the story not in long winded intellectual excursions that remove you from the tale.
Don't miss this author's work. He is superb.

The next book I read had better be spectacularly good because this one is a tough act to follow. How I came upon it I’m not sure since it wasn’t widely reviewed, was published by a small press (Dzanc) and was reputed to be “the best book you’ve never read.” I was sorry to see it end. Black humor, intelligent, filled with literary references, wonderfully-drawn characters, very Budd Schulberg-ish, and set in the 1960s.. I could vastly over-simplify by categorizing The Iron Will of Shoeshine Cats as a coming-of-age story, but it’s so much more. Treat yourselves!

This book draws you right in and gets better and deeper up until the halfway point. Then it is like he had to rush to finish it or that another author stepped in. Very disappointing. Characters just fade out, story lines Re abandoned, and I wondered where the. Book I was reading went. Too bad after such a strong start.

Well written and absorbing, pulling the reader into a storyline containing some gifts that both surprise and delight. A look back at our youth, smiling & somewhat tongue in cheek.

Great book. Felt like it started to fall down a tiny bit toward the end, but then the actual ending was great.

Innadril
Fun to read this sophisticated narrative.

An unexpected surprise, this is an outstandingly well crafted novel. I only bought it for the good reviews, and I'm glad I did

Best book I've read this year. The characters come alive on each page. You can't wait to turn the page to see what develops.
