In Gardens, Covenants, Exiles, Dennis Duffy sets out to describe and analyse the effects of Loyalism on the literary culture of Ontario. William Kirby (1817-1906) gave us a vision of Upper Canada as a garden, with its special covenantal status confirmed through the blood spilled in historical conflicts. Yet his readers need also to remember the eighteenthcentury iconographic tradition by which the painting of a garden contained somewhere a tomb bearing the legend, Et In Arcadia Ego (freely translated, And I am here, even in Arcadia). The neo-classical era’s equivalent to a medievalmemento moriis implicit in Kirby’s new Eden.
