I love most of Ms. Erskine's works especially Lady of Hay and House of Echoes, among others.

I love most of Ms. The story is dragged out too long and could have been cut by two hundred pages at least. The reason is because after some time, the story gets repetitive. The story centers around a Scottish man, Adam, who as a young boy came upon a Pictish stone carving up on the hills and through this stone steps through a portal into another time, taking him thousands of years through.

Two Barbara Erskine books in a row, because she writes so well! This one was a heavier tome than the last because it tells the epic story of a Druid priestess's obsession with a mortal man across time and place, spanning more than 50 years. Brid is a vicious and jealous character who will stop at nothing to have her Adam to herself, even though he tries to live a normal life by marrying the beautiful Jane and having a child.

A historian by training, Barbara Erskine is the author of many bestselling novels that demonstrate her interest in both history and the supernatural, plus three collections of short stories. Her first novel, Lady of Hay, has sold over two million copies worldwide.

On the Edge of Darkness. Stunning repackage of the story of a woman trapped in the wrong time. Abandoned by her twentieth century lover, she plots a terrible revenge on him and his family. Adam Craig is fourteen when, near an isolated Celtic stone in the wild Scottish Highlands, he meets Brid, whose exotic, gypsy-like dress and strange attitudes fascinate him. They become friends, then, in time, passionate lovers.

After a broken love affair, biographer Kate Kennedy retires to a remote cottage on the wild Essex coast to work on her new book until her landlord's daughter uncovers a Roman site nearby and long-buried passions are unleashed! In her lonely cottage, Kate is terrorized by mysterious forces. What do these ghosts want?

Another good book by Barbara Erskine. I found it quite different from her other books. I have read all of Barbara Erskine's books and enjoyed them all thoroughly. I particularly like historical novels, but the way that she writes makes a book 'un-put-downable'.

Another good book by Barbara Erskine. Some pages of the book gave me goosebumps. Pepole will love, and then hate Brid. I would recommend this book and the previous ones to anyone and can't wait for the next one!

Barbara Erskine asserts the moral right to be identified as the author of this work. After only a few minutes’ leafing half-heartedly through a book on spiders he threw it down on the table and went out onto the landing. This novel is entirely a work of fiction. The names, characters and incidents portrayed in it are the work of the author’s imagination. He listened for a moment, then he ran down the narrow upper flight of stairs, then the broader flight below and went to peer once more into the kitchen. It was as cheerless and empty as before.

I love most of Ms. Erskine's works especially Lady of Hay and House of Echoes, among others. "On The Edge of Darkness" is an interesting and engaging read but I felt it could have benefited from better editing. The story is dragged out too long and could have been cut by two hundred pages at least. The reason is because after some time, the story gets repetitive. The story centers around a Scottish man, Adam, who as a young boy came upon a Pictish stone carving up on the hills and through this stone steps through a portal into another time, taking him thousands of years through time to the period where Druids lived. He meets the enigmatic Brid and her brother and mother, who initially welcome Adam. Soon however, it becomes clear to them that Adam is from another time, and in fear of Brid's Druid High Priest uncle Briochan, they warn Adam to stay away. Brid however, refuses to be put off as she has fallen hard for Adam and as the two grow into teens, their passion for each other is so consuming that it turns into an obsessive love on Brid's part, one that has terrible consequences for all those close to Adam.

Much as I loved the Druid storyline, I felt the story dragged too much and became rather repetitive. As Brid escapes her uncle's evil designs, she follows Adam to Edinburgh, where he pursues the study of medicine, and begins to stalk him, using her own magic and ability to traverse the veils between the parallel worlds, and also uses shape-shifting as a means to threaten those who form close relationships with Adam, including Liza and later Adam's wife, Jane. There are way too many instances of the same event - Brid goes into a sort of comatose state, and yet her spirit is able to travel to where Adam is and causes havoc in his personal life. Brid turns into a cat and tries to harm those Adam loves. This occurs again and again. I felt the book would have been a lot better if the story had been less repetitive and the time span shortened - instead of spanning nearly 50 years, it would have been a more absorbing read if the story had just focused on the first two decades after Adam's first encounter with Brid as a young boy.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the story but I did find myself skimming pages to get to the "meat" of the story. This is perhaps one of my least favorite of Ms. Erskine's works.

This is a well written, compelling story of a love that intersects the past, as well as the present. An excellent piece of paranormal fiction, it keeps the reader riveted to the pages.

The story begins in the nineteen thirties, when a fourteen year old boy named Adam, while traipsing in the isolated crags of the Scottish highlands near an ancient Celtic stone, meets a girl named Brid whom he mistakes for a gypsy, due to her wild, long hair, and her exotic style of dress. Unbeknownst to him, a portal in time has opened, allowing Adam and Brid, who is actually a Druid from the sixth century, to cross back and forth in time. Adam, however, does not realize that he is actually travelling back and forth in time, while Brid is not only fully aware of what is happening, but is doing so in contravention of what her uncle, a high priest to the Druids, and her training have taught her.

Over time, she becomes obsessive about Adam, who is her first love, while Adam, as he grows up, moves on with his life. In leaving the heartsick Brid behind and consigning her to his memories, he takes his life in a seemingly new direction.

Brid, on the other hand, forsaking the teachings of her people and incurring the wrath of her powerful uncle and a sure sentence of death, is dead serious about Adam, and she goes through the time portal in search of him. Adam, who has by now left home to go to medical school, is unaware of her obsession and of the lifelong quest now set in motion.

Over the years, Adam makes new friends, becomes a doctor, gets married, and has a family, but Brid, trapped in the wrong time, begins to haunt them all, as she searches for Adam. Her obsession with him finally turns deadly, and the body count begins, as she seeks to tear him asunder from all whom he holds dear.

It is only fifty years into the nightmare that this obsessive love is finally put to rest. How this happens, and at what cost, will keep the reader turning the pages of this well written and imaginative novel.
