This book-the fourth that I have read in the "Ecstasy" series by Janelle Taylor-is by far to me the best of the ones so far. However, even though I give the book 5 stars, I do so with great reluctance.

The Particulars: The book begins five years after the marriage of Gray Eagle, a future Oglala Indian chief and his wife, Alisha Williams, who they are passing off as a half-Blackfoot Indian princess named Shalee. (The reason: Gray Eagle wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to have Alisha, but avoid the scorn and ridicule of his tribe by marrying his white slave, hence the elaborate lie.) While they are happy with their marriage and their son, Bright Arrow, who is four at the time of the book-he will get his own story later- there are two things that will threaten their happiness. One, the continuing advance of whites westward, and two, a white slave in the Oglala camp, Leah Winston. Leah is the slave of Running Wolf, Gray Eagle's father and current Oglala chief. She also bears a striking resemblance to Shalee, which Leah uses to her advantage. When Shalee is kidnapped, assaulted and left for dead by Bluecoats-soldiers-Leah moves in to try to seduce Gray Eagle on several occasions, none of which are successful. When Gray Eagle eventually finds Shalee, she has amnesia and can't remember the last five years of her life, which causes tremendous friction between them. Leah tries to take advantage of this but fails.Leah tries to take over Shalee's life, including trying to kill Shalee, but dies in the process. Gray Eagle and the Oglalas eventually have a battle with the Bluecoats, which the Oglalas win, and for a while, Gray Eagle and Shalee are happy again, or as happy as you can be lying to just about everyone; only one of Gray Eagle's friends knows the truth about Shalee, and he's in love with her as well-even though he has his own mate at the end of the book, so he'll never tell.

This book reminds me why I love Janelle Taylor and why she is a New York Times bestselling author. She brings every emotion out with all of her characters and I felt every emotion they felt. That is the positive. There is a big negative, which I will get to later.

Sex: Lots of it. Gray Eagle and Shalee have several intimate encounters, described in Mrs. Taylor's usual flowery prose. Leah tries three times to seduce Gray Eagle, none of which are successful. It's graphic, but nowhere near the erotica level.

Violence: There are some violent scenes. Shalee and Bright Arrow are attacked by soldiers who kidnap him and assault her and leave her for dead. Leah is raped by Running Wolf, who also bites her during the act. She is also struck and kicked at various points in the book. There is also a scene near the end where soldiers attack what they think is an unprotected camp, but are thwarted by Gray Eagle's cunning. These scenes are described a little graphically. Not horror film graphic, but clearly enough to let you know that people are getting killed.

While I really liked this book, and I gave it five stars, I do so reluctantly. In previous books, Gray Eagle has done the following things to Alisha/Shalee:

Sexually assaulted her.
Physically assaulted her.
Verbally abused her.
Emotionally abused her.

No matter how much Mrs. Taylor tries to excuse/defend/justify Gray Eagle's conduct and despite her efforts to redeem him somewhat in this book-he only verbally and emotionally abuses her here-the stain will never come clean with me. I'm not saying that romance novel heroes or heroines have to be nice and kind to each other all the time-neither I nor anyone I know is nice to everyone all the time-there is a difference between intentional and unintentional hurting someone. Most of the time, when Gray Eagle is hurting Alisha/Shalee, he does so with full knowledge and intent to do so. He does apologize later, most of the time, but I can't forgive everything he has done to her.

Goll
This is the fourth book in the Grey Eagle series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books, but this one was just OK, it wasn't great. Alisha had lived as Princess Shalee and Grey Eagles wife for four years and together they had a son, Bright Arrow. One day wile gathering water to wash clothes, two white soldiers stole Bright Arrow and and knocked unconscious Shalee who then fell into the swelled and freezing river to be swept away. Although she lived and was rescued she had lost the memory of the past six years of her life and could not remember her husband, son or the life they shared together. A daring and conniving white slave who favored Shalee seeks to take advantage of her absence and loss of memory to replace her in Grey Eagle's life and causes numerous problems along the way while Shalee still cannot recall her life.

This book was OK. At the beginning I was kind of annoyed by how unrealistic her memory loss was. Most who lose their memories still retain their procedural memories. If she would have woke up confused by where she was and what happened to her yet somehow could understand fluent Sioux and finely embroider Grey Eagle's shirts I would have been more into it. I know, I know, it's a fictional book lol. But sometimes us psychology or history buffs get annoyed by fictional books that are just too unrealistic. But, the plot did get interesting so after a couple of chapters I overlooked this annoying detail.

There was just WAY too much sex in this book. Every other scene one of the men was "ablaze with fiery passion" or one of the female main characters was and we have to read all the "juicy" details about it. Every other scene he was riding his stallion in her canyon and then doing it all over again five seconds later. *sighs and rolls eyes*

If you loved the other three books this book wasn't bad. It did get interesting and we learn more details and history about the characters. It just wasn't AS good as the first three. I'm still going to go on and read the rest of the series because I really like this series and all the characters and want to read what happens in the future with them. I felt sometimes the violence against women was a little much. As opposed to the other books there were scenes here where it wasn't in a punishment sense and it wasn't considered a horrible deed but just outright kicking down a female by a male because she was scorned by them and was a trouble maker. But this was only a scene or two, the rest of the book was fine.

This is the fourth book in the Grey Eagle series.

When Shalee and Grey Eagle have finally lived in love for the past five winters, Shalee starts to fear that too much love and happiness will find a way to fall apart. When Bluecoats attack Shalee and push her into the river, she is carried miles away from home. When no one can find her or any signs they start to fear her dead. Grey Eagle refuses to believe that she is lost to him. When he finally gets word that she's been found, he rushes to her side only to discover that she can't remember him. She can't remember the last five years. Now Grey Eagle has to make Alisha fall in love with him and become Shalee again.

I loved this! Grey Eagle was so loving and caring throughout this whole book. The amnesia aspect was wonderful and kept me engrossed. The feelings and reactions felt so real that you could almost taste the confusion and torment. Again, another wonderful book by Ms. Taylor.

Stars- 5
Passion- 4

Uaha
So many times I raged with emotions! Anger, shock, happiness, tears, fury, and so forth. I almost stopped reading when Shalee went into the water for I too thought she died. And the long trek back for her and Gray Eagle, the horrible things Leah did to all concerned. It's a good thing it ended right, had it not I would not be going to the next book in this series. However I am anxiously waiting now to start the journey into their lives once again and pray you don't allow them to be drawn apart again. I hope she has daughters and another son. As sad as these books are they are also filled with wonder, Joy and true long lasting love. Enjoy the complete series as I am.

This is really well written series if you like these types of books. It is easy to get hooked.
