Melanie Rawn writes total garbage. One or two good ideas littered with shallow characters, nonsensical plots, and anticlimactic endings. This book almost makes me wish I was illiterate.

With family, servants, and vassals watching every move he made, he could not have snuck a mouse into his chambers, let alone a girl are if everyone lined up in the Hall to observe his choice of a bedmate, he ran into an unexpected difficulty. Not a single female in Stronghold-with one obvious exception-appealed to him. The pretty ones were too young, married, or betrothed, and therefore unapproachable. He was, after all, an honorable man. Besides, the picture of himself as infamous seducer was ludicrous.

I recently was reminded of this trilogy, and the one that follows, and how much I loved these books. There was a time when I reread these books many times, probably over a hundred times. That is how much I love them.

That love hasn't faded at all. Melanie Rawn created a world and a people that gives everything you could possibly want in a fantasy world. It gives love, hate, peace, war, magic, royalty, commoners, children to take over the next generation and best of all; dragons. These beautiful creatures are central to the power, wealth and the lands of this world. They are beloved of Prince Rohan and his lady Sioned. They are feared by the peoples of the various lands that surround the desert holding, Stronghold, Prince Rohan's home and power base They are beautiful and vicious, wild and virile, birthing hundreds of hatchlings at each mating. And they populate the caves at Rivenrock near Stronghold giving Prince Rohan and his family the gift of watching these marvelous creatures in all their daily routines. Between the Dragon Prince,Rohan and his Sunrunner Lady Sioned, they take the lands of their fprefathers and through an unwanted war that hurts their hearts and souls in it's cruelty, they create a law abiding land that is cherished. From here they can reach for the stars.

Melanie Rawn has an imagination that exceeds most authors, particularly in the Fantasy genre. Her books bring me joy and sadness, love and resentment, appreciation and envy. She brings out so many emotions that I never know how I will be when I have to put her books down. I have come to love her characters to a point that I wish they were real. And what an amazing talent to have.

So Very Well Done, Melanie Rawn that words are inadequate. I don't have your gift of prose, so let me just say you have given me a gift that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you.

The writer was at her best when writing this story and the other ones in the series. I read all 6 of them over and over again, savoring the rich storytelling and detailed and colorful characters. The magic system she has set up with the Sunrunners is not overdone and makes you want to learn more about the history of it. I love reading about all the different Princedoms. Dialogue seems natural and sex scenes are tame and very few...just the way I like my fantasy stories. This series has been one of my favorites for many years! It reminds me of the Dune series by Frank Herbert, I think, that was made into a movie. (I may not have his name right) I hope Hollywood never gets their claws into it because I fear they will never be able to do it justice! I highly recommend this book!

Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn is an intriguing high fantasy romance novel that spends a great deal of time developing a layered world and characters. The story follows Sioned, a young woman who has trained as a Sunrunner but who is destined to marry a prince, Rohan. We see Sioned and Rohan meet, come to terms with their destiny, and develop as people and as a couple as they work to rule their land.

I enjoyed the Dragon Prince quite a bit. It reminded me of the type of fantasy books that I read as a teenager. The world building is especially compelling. In this world magic is performed by Sunrunners, men and women who can use the power of the sun's and the moon's light to communicate, create light, and more. They are pacifists who are dedicated to serving the people. They have promised never to take sides in politics and, above all, to never use their powers to kill. One of my main conflicts in the book is Sioned and the two sides of her life. She is a Sunrunner and she has been trained as such. However, she is also to become a princess, someone who has to take a political view and has to support her family in times of need. Her struggle between both sides of her self is her most striking area of concern and growth.

There is a lot of action and romance in this story. There are a few different couples who are truly in love and their relationships are enviable. Though the world is male dominated, as tends to be the case in fantasy, these relationships are balanced, believable and sweet. As for action, there is a great deal of conflict going on between Rohan and the High Prince, a ruthless and twisted ruler who gets what he wants through manipulation and violence. As the book progresses, this conflict boils up and provides for many great action scenes, political schemes, and pitted battles.

The only real issues I had with the books were the pacing and the evil characters. Firstly, the book had a decent flow for the first 1/2 but, as time passes, huge events and amounts of time are passed over as nearly an afterthought. I felt that these time jumps forced me to miss out on some serious conflicts and plot points that I would have liked to experience. Also, the evil characters, especially the High Prince and his scheming daughter, are relatively flat and definitely evil. They don't have much nuance and they tend to be a little "twirling mustache"-y in their dealing with their enemies.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to fans of fantasy who are looking for a new and interesting world to get immersed in. Check it out!

I love this first book in the trilogy as well as the rest of them, including the ones in the next trilogy that follows. I love them all on so many levels. I find that character names play a big role in whether or not I will read a book. The fact that I could pronounce Melanie Rawn's character names and found them appealing, made me want to read her books. Never mind that I don't pronounce them the same as she, probably, does. Obviously, the plot has to be intriguing and it was. Another thing that attracted me was the book cover. It is very important to me that the first book has a great cover. The succeeding books in a series, not so much because I'm already hooked on the story and characters. I highly recommend reading this book and the others in this trilogy ( Dragon Prince ) plus the related trilogy that comes after it (Dragon Star). Please make sure that the author is Melanie Rawn as I've seen the same title or similar titles but by different authors.

This is one of the better books from the 90's about love, war and family issues. Melanie Rawn has been my favorite for a long time. I use this book to see how she references family time with her characters. Each of them have their own voice throughout the book and the interactions are serious, funny and cute all jumbled into one. Overcoming many things throughout this book, the writer takes you on one heck of a journey! Enjoy!
