According to a Xhosa legend a beautiful maiden who lived in a village on the shores of a coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a sheer cliff, fell in love with a man of the legendary sea-people. On hearing of the unnatural liaison, her angry father forbade her to see her lover or leave the village.

The term first appeared in print in 1979 as mashave in an unrelated text (Myths and Legends of Southern Africa by Penny Miller, published by TV Bulpin, Cape Town) that nevertheless reflects today’s common usage and meaning in contemporary Southern Africa. The mashave are spirits of foreigners, or of wanderers who died far away from their families and clans and did not receive a proper burial. Owing to this, they were never called home, but continued to roam restlessly through the bush.

It conveys, like very few books I have read, the power of, and disturbing truths that underlie, mankind's myth and legends.

I was fortunate to obtain a copy of this book in my teen years. My interest in the unexplained, myths and all legends around the world, gave me an interesting insight as to how close these are to each other. I am greek and our myths and legends are well known all over the world, but the similarity to many of the myths and legends to South Africa is astounding. As we have mother earth so does the africans, represented by a large female earthworm with many breasts to nurture the earth. I would say that as the world is turning to their roots, we should keep in mind that we all have similar stories in our past. I live in South Africa and I was born here, I have always loved the cultural diversity here as I, feel we learn and grow and develop in ways which often make the rest of the world stand up and take a look. This book captures that. Although it was written in 1979, I feel that this author was way before her time, and this book will be as popular today as it was then. I treasure my copy.
