I was just sitting on my balcony and saw a "shooting star" (a meteor) falling from the sky, not to mention a big orange full moon. It obviously reminded me of astronomy in general, thus I find myself reviewing an astronomy textbook. I had two astronomy classes in college many moons ago (pun intended). Astronomy: The Cosmic Journey (Fourth Edition - 1989) by author William K. Hartmann was the textbook I used. This is obviously an older edition of the book I'm reviewing, but the basics of astronomy are the most important and can be found in the 1989 book. Sure, our knowledge of the solar system and our galaxy and the universe has greatly expanded in the last twenty years (including demoting Pluto to dwarf planet status in 2006), but if you want to read about the basic core knowledge that man has about the cosmos, then any edition of this book will do. Anybody who has studied astronomy knows how complex and technical it can be. The information in this book isn't overly technical, in my opinion.

Everything you want to know about planets, moons, stars, galaxies, asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, supernovae, dust, nebulae, and on and on and on, can be found in this book. I find it an enjoyable textbook to read. It'll transport you out of this crazy world called Earth and let you escape for a while and visit other planets out there. I wouldn't mind living on Mars, myself.

I like to read book and when I read this book, I learned many thing about astronomy, and I found this book very helpfull and easy to understand.
