Bobcat: Master of Survival tells the story of the most adaptable and resilient wild feline in the world. While half the wild cat species worldwide are in danger, the bobcat is thriving, even expanding its range in North America. Why are bobcats flourishing when so many other wild felines are advancing towards extinction? The book explains how scientists apply the latest in wildlife research technology to probe this diminutive predator's habits and behavior. The reader is invited inside the bobcat's world to see how they hunt, kill prey, raise their young, coexist with humans, and deftly navigate the endless obstacles to survival. The bobcat is both the most studied and the most exploited wild feline in the world. Millions have been killed for the fur trade. They were the focus of major controversy in the 1970s that transformed international conservation of wild felines. The book discusses how economics and politics play a far greater role in bobcat management and conservation than does science. Bobcat is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the natural history and management of bobcats to appear in 40 years.

I thought this was a wonderful book. I have lived in central Nebraska all my life and have only had the priviledge of seeing three bobcats in the wild even though I have been a nature lover for 50 years and am frequently out in the field. The first bobcat I saw was in 1992 as he suddenly dashed in front of my headlights one evening while a friend and I were slowing crusing "the River Road." I waited 20 more years before glimpsing another one. She was dead along the road near where I live. I buried her in the trees close by. The third one was just three weeks ago as I was driving home at 8:00 p.m. What I thought was a deer on the river bridge near my home morphed into a bobcat as I got closer. I am sorry to say she was limping badly. I don't know if it was from a trap or if she was hit by a car.
Thank you, Mr. Hansen, for writing this wonderful book. I especially loved the part about urging citizens to get involved in helping the bobcats. I hate that they are hunted and trapped. In Nebraska in the 2011-2012 season 1,900 were trapped/hunted.

This book is very well researched and complete, almost encyclopedic, especially for a small book. I cannot imagine a question about Bobcats that it doesn't answer or give you enough information to lead the reader to where the answer might be found.
People that love bobcats or just the idea of bobcats in our native habitats will find many things that make that love more enjoyable inside its covers.
Cat lovers especially will see parallels with and insights to their companion animals. Bob cats and Pussy cats are not really that far apart.

This book pasinately and professionally expresses the concern for the preservation and conservation of the enigmatic and elusive bobcat, but threading in careful balance to avoid dismissing the need to understand the hard reality of economic and cultural interests behind pelt trading and hunting. Explanations on the bobcat biology, hunting, territorial use and relation with other species (specially the coyote) are clear and easy to follow by the non-specialized reader. I had never suspected that this 10-15 kg cat was able to hunt adult white tailed deer. The author clearly conveys how this feline has survived (in fact, thrives) even if enduring habitat fragmentation and other ecological human caued ills. A very enjoyable read.

I wanted a book about bobcats because i am a bobcat hunter. The more I know about the habits of bobcats the better hunter I will be. However, I got more out of this book including a new appreciation of how these wildcats have adapted to our loss of habitat across the US.

Great research and Bobcat study. Sad what we humans are doing to our wild life. Excellent story.

Jesmi
if you want to know about the animal, this is the book to read.

Cezel
Great informative book. Everything you ever want to know about bobcats. this was a gift and the person that received the book said it was one of the best he has read on Bobcats.

I am an avid reader of outdoor and nature books. I rated this book as a 3 because for the average reader of nature books this is not a "pleasure" read. It is more like a textbook for a graduate wildlife biology course.

The author is an expert in the field. Unfortunately he writes in a technical manner- more like a report. He begins a paragraph with a statement and then proceeds to validate it using quotes and references to several other researchers. This makes for tedious reading.
