A disappointment for sure, from the way it was advertised we expected a book of photos of the birds of Israel rather than a college text book.

This is an excellent little field guide to ~50% of the birds that regularly occur in Israel, either resident or migratory. The pictures are good and the text is readable and interesting.

BRILLIANT

The book was very old and too big to take in the field. So I cut the photos out and made a postcard sized bundle to take with me when out walking.

Book was very old, had parts of pages cut out, had very few pictures of birds and was very out of date. To me it was a rip off.

THE BASICS:
hardcover; good color photos show 60 (12%) of Israel's 500+ species; another 30+ black-and-white line illustrations show a few other birds; 470+ species have their natural history reviewed; this is a reference for home use and not a field or identification guide; no range maps

THE REVIEW:
This book is designed to be a reference to the natural history of 470 (94%) species found in Israel. It is not an identification or photographic guide. Although mostly a reference, this book does contain some color photos of 60 (12%) of Israel's birds. These photographs are of good quality in size, clarity, and pose. The selection of species photographed represents a smattering of bird families from herons, ducks, shorebirds, raptors, pipits, and ravens. Another 30+ nice black-and-white line drawings of various species are also distributed throughout the book.

The information provided is thorough which reflects the author's great familiarity of the birds' natural history due to research and experience. The layout of the book organizes the birds into chapters with each chapter assigned to each of 21 Orders (i.e., grebes; swans, geese, ducks; parrots; swifts and allies, etc.) These Orders are broken down further into Families. Each chapter begins with a good overview of the natural history of the order and family. The material goes into greater detail to give specific information on each of the species.

The species accounts cover several topics which include description, habit and distribution, behavior, and nesting. Depending on the status of the bird in the country, each species is given anywhere from one-quarter to a full page of text. The information tends to be lengthier and more in-depth for the more common birds like the Golden Eagle. These more common birds are allotted one and one-half pages of text. The less common birds such as the Marsh Warbler receive a short paragraph that simply denotes its status and habitat preference.

This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in the birds of the Middle East and to those with a special interest in understanding more about each of the birds found in Israel. This book is a good reference to have on your shelf. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample, August 2008)

This is a fabulous 272 hardback book, including more than two dozen color plates of the birds of Israel. The volume includes more than 30 new species discovered since the last survey conducted in the region by Meinertzhagen for his 1954 volume, The Birds of Arabia. Many of the more than 470 species to be found in Israel range as far as the Caspian Sea, northern Russia and Siberia, and into Europe Eastern and Western Europe.

These birds reside throughout Israel, as well as the Judean Desert and Samaria and into the Straits of Tiran.

One especially gorgeous bird is the Smyrna Kingfisher, with a tiny white breast, and deep turquoise back and red head and shoulders. But there are also several lovely species of sandgrouse, including the Lichtenstein's, Crowned and Black-bellied, at least five species of terns, and many of seagulls.

The shorebirds, including plovers, and the collared pratincole, are also wondrous indeed.

All nature lovers who reside in or visit Israel should definitely purchase a copy of this book.
