Being the Remarks of Captain W. Coats in Many Voyages to that Locality between the Years 1727 and 1751. Has not been attempted by any person that I know of. The voyages of Hudson, James, Fox, Button, and others, were directed to perticular purposes; and what has past between Mr. Dobbs and C. Middleton, is so full of argument and dispute, that the real geography is neglected-who by atoo eager pursute after truth have out run it, and left it behind-who by atoo ernest contention about it, have rendred it more.

With an Appendix Containing Extracts from the Log of Capt.

Geography of Hudson's Bay : Being the Remarks of Captain W. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India.

William Coats entered the service of the Hudson’s Bay Company in. .Within a few weeks Coats was dead.

William Coats entered the service of the Hudson’s Bay Company in November 1726, and on his first voyage to the bay in 1727 lost his new command, the Mary, off Cape Farewell, Greenland. The misfortune was repeated nine years later when ice at the entrance to Hudson Strait beset the Hudson’s Bay and crush’d our sides in, and sunk her in twenty minutes. The parish registers and his will show that Coats was a family man of some substance.

The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This volume, published in 1852, was edited by John Barrow, son of the distinguished promoter of Arctic exploration Sir John Barrow. It contains two accounts of exploration around Hudson's Bay - the narrative of Captain William Coats who made several voyages in the region in the 1720s and 30s, and the ship's log and other documents of Captain Middleton of H.M.S. Furnace who in 1741-2 attempted to discover the much sought-after North-West Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
