British author Peter Mayle is known for his series of books detailing life in Provence, France. Mayle eventually caught the attention of Papert Koenig, a competing advertising agency and moved back to London to head up their creative team. Peter was born on June 14, 1939 in Brighton, East Sussex, England. The youngest of three children, Mayle and his family moved to Barbados at the end or World War II. At sixteen, Peter dropped out of school and returned to England. In 1957 he began his first job, working as a trainee at the Shell Oil office in London.

Peter Mayle (/meɪl/ "mail"; 14 June 1939 – 18 January 2018) was a British author noted for his memoirs of life in Provence, France. Born in Brighton, Sussex, the youngest of three children, Mayle and his parents moved to Barbados in the aftermath of World War II, where his father was transferred as a Colonial Office employee. Mayle returned to England after leaving school at 16 in Barbados.
