Rivers play a vital role in our history and recreation.

Minnesota might be known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but don't forget its thousands of river miles. From the source of the Mississippi to the St. Croix, Root, Red and more, rivers play a vital role in our history and recreation. Thomas Waters offers fascinating accounts of his river explorations--as well as insightful notes on conservation; it's as if you were right there with him!

Captain America
If a novice conservationist, or newbie to the great outdoors of Minnesota, needs a guide to finding wild places, the search ends with this gem of a coinage of words. When packing to go up-north from the cities and agricultural parts of the state this tome should be part of the baggage to be stowed in the canoe or kayak. There is more potential adventure packed between the covers of the new Tom Waters book than one can complete in a lifetime. Most of the places Waters writes about are lightly tread upon and, certainly, not despoiled. It is because educators, such as Tom Waters, have devoted their lives to preserving and protecting the great waterways of the north woods. Waters is in the forefront of visionaries whose life's work led to the fact that Minnesota is a treasure of wilderness. Wherever a canoe launch is found, a trout rises to a dry fly or a kayak can be rented Tom Waters, and his precursors, should be silently thanked for their lifelong dedication to preserving the wild streams and rivers of Minnesota. The legacy of Waters' educational work will continue as long as his books are available, and his coterie of followers and outdoors enthusiasts enjoy the fruits of his labors he invested these many long years.

Tom Waters' most recent book, Rivers of Minnesota, is the confluence of many streams in the life of a man, who is, at once, writer, scientist, philosopher and poet. Through the pages of this anthology, he shares with us his deep understanding of the rivers emerging from the Minnesota landscape. By providing clear and engaging linkages between the rivers themselves and their tortuous routes through city, field and forest, he invites the reader to become a participant rather than a bystander in exploring the perpetual renewal of our flowing waters. No mere travelogue, the narrative invites the reader to imagine how the character of each river depends upon its physical origins and surroundings. The currents in these streams are as much spiritual and emotional as they are physical.

The book gathers the streams according to their continental drainages. We move with fishermen, paddlers and hikers from springs and rills, across riffles and cascades, through runs and pools to arrive at terminal waters from Hudson's Bay and Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way we reflect upon the names and places, the myths and legends, and the history of human passage along these waters. We stop frequently to fish, to rest and to listen to the river's song. As we exit each chapter, a conservation note reminds us of our duty to leave these rivers as healthy as we found them, so that they may continue to provide the sustenance and re-creation of the spirit that we have enjoyed in traveling them.

Rivers of Minnesota is a thoroughly enjoyable journey whether you proceed from beginning to end, or explore the chapters in random order. The comfortable style belies the underlying scholarship, but the reader has ample opportunity to pursue authoritative sources cited frequently in the text. This capstone work leaves no doubt that Tom Waters remains dean of the literature on Minnesota's precious flowing-water resources.

WOGY
It is hard to imagine anyone knowing Minnesota's rivers better than Tom Waters. Professor Emeritus from the University of Minnesota and one of the leading stream/river ecologists of his day, Waters has lived and studied Minnesota streams, their biota and ecology, for more than 30 years. As an avid fisherman from boyhood, he has explored Minnesota streams like no one else for more than 70 years. He knows Minnesota streams like the back of his hand - their geological and human history, their physical features, their fish species, their recreational values, their state and national parks. In "The Rivers of Minnesota: Recreation & Conservation" Waters brings this tremendous body of knowledge together, as he takes us on a journey throughout the different portions of the state and helps us envision the many ways that streams can be used for enjoyment and their need for protection. At the outset, I thought this would be a great book for Minnesotans who treasure the outdoors (and it is), but it is much more than that. I felt myself wanting to take at least a 2-week trip and explore the streams of the North Shore, or the Red River of the North, or the Driftless Area, or the St Croix and its tributaries. This book is an easy read, with a friendly conversational style, and includes many photos, a group of which are beautiful color photos all in a central section of the book. This is a book about streams and their recreational values, not about fishing per se, but any stream fisherman would love this book, as would kayakers, other river recreationalists, or just those of us who are entranced by the beauty of nature. At a price less than it takes to feed 2 or 3 at a fast food restaurant, this book is a real steal, and a must for outdoor enthusiasts from Minnesota, surrounding states, and beyond. You might want to buy 2, just in case you drop one in a stream.

Tom Waters was my favorite professor at the University of Minnesota. When he taught you about waters and fisheries of Minnesota he displayed his love of all as a scientist but more so as a fisherman, canoeist and a person who just loved being near those waters. In retirement he has more time for his writing and he does it very well. I particularly admire the fact that he writes in a style meant for the non-scientist that conveys enough technical information that it could assist students to learn be limnologists. In this book he does that in the "conservation notes" at the end of each chapter. It hurts to think of this great person, who became a wonderful friend that shared many hours woodcock hunting which was another of his pleasures, is now in assisted care with limited time left but still continues to write.
