The recent swine flu non event gave us some idea of how hard it must be to properly foresee what sort of flu pandemic or epidemic might be out there mutating right now in some pigsty in Bolivia or Peru. If one looks back on serious pandemics in history, especially the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 – 1919, there were strange combinations of factors which made the pandemic spread like wildfire.

Consequences of volcanic eruptions

Consequences of volcanic eruptions. Volcanic eruption is a very dangerous natural phenomenon. The eruption still causes great harm to both nature and people even if it happens without destruction and human victims. Soil remains scorched for many years in the area where lava has flown. Powerful volcanic eruptions can cause consequences not just on a single continent but over vast areas. For example, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 led to a decrease in temperature throughout the planet by . -0. 7° C. Protecting people from natural disasters.

Time bomb: how to survive the upcoming icelandic volcanic eruptions. Grimsvotn was a far more intense eruption that the eruption of Eyafjoll in April 2010, an earlier Icelandic eruption. 100 times more material per second that Eyafjoll were spewed into the atmosphere by Grimsvotn. This book has been written to be a self help book so that the public in general can protect themselves from the worst effects of the next Icelandic volcanic eruptions. We have already seen in March & April of 2010 what a small volcanic eruption did when Eyjafjallajokull blew up and caused chaos over the skies of Europe and North America. This was the least harmful perhaps of all 18 - 25 massive strato volcanoes some of which I believe could erupt in the next 5 years. Ones like Katla which are linked to EJ (short version of Eyjafjallajokull) are about 10 times bigger than EJ. Then there is Laki which erupted in 1783 and 1784 and caused a huge cloud of yellow poison mustard gas to spread over Europe potentially killing about 1 million people and yet no one today knows about this volcano, this is one of the biggest killers the world has ever known possibly killing up to 6 million people worldwide due to its effects upon the Jet stream and Monsoon rains and yet only a handful of Nordic Volcanologists and scientists seem to know about it. My book will educate the public to the dangerous relationship between human civilizations and volcanic eruptions which have profoundly changed the way previous civilizations and historical eras progressed or collapsed as the case may be.

The book is written for the non-scientist. If you are looking for in-depth geological explanations, look elsewhere. With that said I still found it very interesting and there is a lot of good information for the general public. My biggest problem with the book is that there was clearly not an editor. The grammar is terrible. This guy loves run on sentences :) But it's not so distracting that you can't read the book. I don't understand how people can publish without a professional editor (I guess they are expensive, or people over estimate their writing abilities). I would still encourage you to read this if you want to get a sense of how to prepare for a major disaster. There are a lot of people with their heads in the sand on these issues.

The above sentence readily summarizes the whole damn book.
Written in the classic 'We're DOO-OOMED!" school of literature, and guided by a knowledge of Geology that is inferior to that of an especially dull Third Grader's, it is disaster planning for the feckless, the lack-witted, and the gullible.
You wanna avoid a volcano? Don't live near one.
A book only the feeble-minded could respect. Bah.

I read the book because of the exciting title of the book, however this was about as good as the book got. Although the author has clearly done some research into the topic, lots of it is scientifically inaccurate. The sections of the book dont follow and he uses ridiculous hypothetical examples of what could happen that seem to come from nowhere. Basically read the book for abit of a laugh and if you want to learn about some history of Icelandic and global volcanism but dont take literally what the author is as it is frankly terribly inaccurate.
