Much like certain clans of Sierra Miwoks who would leave the ice and snow of the high mountains for the gentler winter clime of California's foothills and Central Valley, author Craig Carrozzi is taking his show back on the road. This quintessentially California Gold Rush saga brings into sharp focus, Chief Tenaya, the last Chief of the Sierra Miwok Clans living in Yosemite Valley and perhaps the most famous Native American figure most of the rest of America has never heard of; and, brings back to life in its natural state the much lamented Hetch Hetchy Valley, called the "Twin of Yosemite Valley".

Historical novel. "Resurrects the Hetch Hetchy Valley in its natural state - to give the reader an image of what was lost, and to plant the seed of what may be once more if the dam were ever removed and the great valley restored."

Ambrose Bierce, Jack London, and John Muir are only a few of the historical luminaries who populate Craig Carrozzi's novel. Its hero, however, is Jeremiah Ignatius McElroy, whose adventures include working as a cabin boy, delving into the fur trade, and even being caught up in the Gold Rush. Oh--there's a love interest, too--the beautiful Colette.

Carrozzi's prose here is reminiscent both of the naturalism of Stephen Crane and the cool brevity of Richard Stark.

A sample: Joe Goose blew a piercing note on his harmonica and, to yells of approbation, his invitation was answered. Frenchy Boudreau took up his accordion and Portagee Leo, his mandolin. They grouped up at the end of the bar and played such favorites as "The Boston Burglar," "Black Lulu," and "Oh, Treat My Daughter Kindly."

Jeremiah's elation waxed higher and higher. He sipped on his well-spiked beer and lustily joined his tenor voice to the chorus.

Carrozzi tells as good as a story on the page as he does in person. A former Peace Corps Volunteer (Colombia 1978-1980), he has written about life overseas as well as about baseball.

One reviewer suggested that the Curse of Chief Tenaya be a movie (starring a digitally resurrected John Wayne). Maybe it will happen. Until then, there's the book. Enjoy!

You will enjoy The Curse of Chief Tenaya. Carrozzi has ably interwoven fact and fiction throughout this well-paced novel set in 19th century California. He gives us vivid descriptions of early San Francisco and Oakland - the skylines and transport and people. There are colorful word sketches of winding waterways and open grasslands and majestic mountain vistas. We see, through the eyes of his fictional protagonist, McElroy, the now lost Hetch Hetchy valley in all its former rugged beauty. But, more than this, McElroy touches us. He shows us how history was lived in the days of trappers, traders and gold-mad miners - how history was bent through the clash of white and indian life-values. All of this forms the backdrop for McElroy's own story - a tale that will grab you, engage you, delight you and keep you reading to its gripping conclusion. You will enjoy it.

If you're looking for a well written and well researched historical novel, look no further, The Curse of Chief Tenaya is what you have been looking for. Set in the early days of California, the book tells the tale of Jeremiah McElroy, an Irish immigrant who fled the Irish potato famine and ends up as a trapper in the Sierra's. He's hired by a California robber baron to hunt down a grizzly bear in Yosemite and the adventure begins. The author has woven in the clashes between the indigenous tribes living in California's Sierra's and European opportunists searching for gold and land. This colors the novel and provides the historical context to McElroy's adventure as he leaves a rapidly growing San Francisco for one last foray into Yosemite's dangerous back country. Enjoy.
