This book is a valuable reference to those trying to understand the subject of six sigma. It is definitely not meant to be an all-encompassing reference on the subject, yet it is an important primer (yes, PRIMER) for those who wanto to understand six sigma. Many people immediately skip to the intricate details of six sigma without understanding what is ultimately the PURPOSE of six sigma, and hence fail to fully understand the subject.
The book is written in the first person story form about a man trying to understand from his colleague what six sigma is, how it is implemented, and who are the major players. At the beginning the terminology might be slightly confusing, but it becomes clearer towards the end as the author provides some helpful examples. As I said, will not make you an expert on the complexities of six sigma, but it will provide a useful introduction and will clear many misconceptions that you might have about the subject. The book is brief (shouldnt take anyone more than 3 days to read), well written in simple and logical order.

Ok, so here goes. I had to read this as part of a graduate course I'm taking. On the positive side it boils down a complex and intimidating subject to VERY simple language. It was an easy read, at only about a 120 pages of very large type.

Now for the negative. Please let me preface this with a disclaimer. I'm not a fan of statistics as I think life is an outlier and that assumptions are the mother of all..... I'm also not a fan of mission statements, or initiatives. My Grandfather was the CEO of a fortune 500 and never even went to college, much less try to "revoloutionize" anything. Managers need to manage rather then reinvent the wheel.

Ok, Let me get off my soapbox.
The book read like a bad infomercial for 6s. The book does show value in the 6s program. Unfortunately, when you gain understanding of the program, you realize that it's just an excuse to do the things that you should be doing allready. If you need a program to tell you to fix your problems, then you have bigger issues. Digging deeper, and gathering evidence is something that any high school student could tell you. Why are companies investing millions in this?

This book is still one of the best books out there (even though it has been around for a long time) to really ease a person, a novice, into beginning to feel comfortable about getting into the wonderful world of 'Applied Six Sigma', without being intimidated about the math.
