Rakesh C. Kukreja, Michael L. Hess. One of the targets of free radicals and neutrophil-derived oxidants that is known to be generated during injury of the myocardium is the sarcolemma. Highly toxic oxygen radicals and their metabolites have been implicated in the pathogenesis of n injury. These reactive oxygen species include the superoxide anion, hydroge. More). We therefore examined th. This book describes the role of heat shock proteins myocardial ischemia. It addresses the role of heat shock proteins in, in myocardial protection, in the function of protein kinase C (PKC) and potassium channels, in tumor necrosis factor function, and in antisense.

This text discusses the role of reactive oxygen radicals in the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. These reactive oxygen species include superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen. The book describes the biochemistry of oxygen radicals, the mechanisms of free radical generation from various potential sources, and their interaction with membrane proteins, which leads to cardiovascular dysfunction and protection based on antioxidants and histidine. The endogenous protection strategies based on ischemic preconditioning and heat stress are also discussed.
