Whenever he uses a Sanscrit word, he gives a precise explanation and throughout the book I had the impression he was personally talking to me and showed the light at the end of a dark tunnel of my own ignorance. Very bitter, one-sided bitter life story. The depiction of the circumstances leading to the shooting of the young man during Liberty City riot are not accurate. I was there. I knew Chaplain Hoard, he was a nice man. I found it shocking to read how bitter he was inside. "Woe is me" is what I came away with. Chapain Hoard was treated very well by the military, at least the years I served with him (many). He had free rein to conduct his Chaplain duties as he seemed fit. He retired as a Colonel. I'm not sure that lines up with the racist military he describes.

I got the impression that after many years of opposing racism and discrimination that the author made the full circle and was infact himself the purveyor of a bitter, almost racist rhetoric. This surprised me as I thought a Lutheran pastor of all people would easily overcome his grudge and forgive those who had treated him less than respectfully over the years. Perhaps that was just my reading between the lines.

While I have no doubt that his views as an older man were shaped by his many life's events I though a little introspection should have been in order before he put pen to paper.

Altogether though it made an interesting read. For another biograhy of a Lutheran pastor Doctor Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther (1917 ) by D.H. Steffens.
