This book is very informative and quite enlightening as it relates to the political and social mores of Eastern European and Asian aristocracy during the period of Catherine's reign. The tangled webs of shifting alliances during the roughly 50 years covered by the book are many times fascinating and at times hung by the thread of whether a 16 year old heir to a throne was enchanted at first site by a 13 year old princess.

Done in the last years of her life, it passed into the collection of her young favourite, Ivan Shuvalov. St. Petersburg, Russia/The Bridgeman Art Library The prevailing myth of a conquering foreign ruler bringing civilization and prosperity to Russia is encapsulated by Vigilius Erichsen’s portrait of the uniformed empress astride Brilliant, the charger she rode out towards Oranienbaum the day after her coup.

Admired for her achievements and satirized for her personal life, Catherine the Great was one of the most celebrated monarchs in history, turning eighteenth-century Russia into arguably the largest and most powerful state since the fall of the Roman Empire. She promoted radical political ideas while emphasizing moderation in government. She could be ruthless when necessary, but she charmed everyone she met, joking at private dinner parties in the Hermitage, which she had built for her own use. Determined to endear herself to the Russians, she made religious devotions in which she.

Catherine the Great Simon Dixon. The Russo-Turkish Wars of 1768–74 and 1787–91, adapted from Isabel de Madariaga, Russia in the Age of Catherine the Great (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1981). St Petersburg in 1776. The Partitions of Poland, 1772, 1793 and 1795, adapted from John Doyle Klier, Russia Gathers her Jews: The origins of the ‘Jewish question’ in Russia 1772–1825 (Northern Illinois University Press, 1986).

Determined to endear herself to the Russians, she made religious devotions in which she never believed.

Intimate and revealing, Catherine the Great examines the lifelong friendships that sustained the empress throughout her personal life and places her within the context of the royal court: its politics, its flourishing literature and the very culture that became central to her exercise of absolute power.

Henri Troyat writes well of a woman who had a natural appetite for absolutism. She subjugated the serfs, jailed dissidents, lost her head over younger lovers who were hired to service her lust, encouraged obscene consumption in imitation of Versailles although she detested the French, deplored the ineluctable rise of republicanism and the concept of human rights, stole her son's children, frustrated native Russian talents in preference to ill-fitting Continental transplants, neglected her country's infrastructure (except possibly for establishing some institutions of learning), and generally ruled in such a way that her death began the undoing of all she had worked for for 34 years; that is to say, she did little to strengthen its non-parasitic systems or institutions, she merely enforced her will.

I'm not entirely sure after reading this what made her "Great," unless it was her military conquests, which are given rather hasty treatment by Troyat. Maybe other hereditary monarchs were as bad as Peter III and she merely shone by comparison. Maybe all an hereditary monarch had to do in those days to be considered great was not let the country go to hell in a handbasket.

Those are my thoughts as I finish this book. As a complete newcomer to Catherine, I feel I've learned plenty, and I'm curious enough to try Massie's biography of Catherine, as well as a few biogs of Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great.

Prior to reading this book, the only information that I had on Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, was that she was an 18th century Czarina of some repute and that she was essentially a nymphomaniac. While the author disputes my clinical characterization of Catherine's sexual prowess, he certainly does take great pains to point out her long list of conquests, right up until her death at a then advanced age.

Entire nations hung in the balance.

Especially interesting was the author's repeated juxtaposition between Catherine's espoused liberal "enlightened monarch" ideals and her actual rule over, and disposal of millions of enslaved serfs. Her fascination and financial support of many liberal French and Swiss political reformers and philosophers and then her horror when such philosophies actual came to fruition in the French Revolution.

Ultimately, Catherine was a woman of her times and indisputably proved to be a most able successor to the earlier Peter the Great inasmuch as she made Russia a major player on the European stage and greatly expanded the territory under her control. The personalities involved make for a highly entertaining read.

I've seen some of the comments labeling the prose as dry or tedious and tend to disagree. Certainly, writing style of non-fiction historical biographies differs from that seen in fictionalized accounts. In addition, this is a translation which perhaps hinders certain elements of style that others might prefer. All in all, I was not dissatified with the writing or the content. I recommend this book to any seeking an understanding of Russian or Eastern European history and/or culture during the mid to late 18th century.

I found the book hard to read. At times unable to follow who was the subject of the conversation. I commend the author for his exhaustive research and bibliography. My lack of Russian geography compounded the difficulty reading the book.

A seminal book. Not-put-downable. Wonderful

Henri Troyat writes biographies that read like novels and are so well researched that you feel you really get to know the historical personalities of his books. I wanted to learn more about the people who founded and made S:t Petersburg the fascinating city it is after a recent visit. Now I wish I had read this book (and his biography of Peter the Great) before my trip rather than after. He writes about Catherine in a way that brings her to life as the complex, intelligent, passionate woman she was, both modern and a a product of her times. I heartily recommend any of Henri Troyats biographies to readers who like to read history and biographies but also appreciate good litterature.

Good story, kind of redundant throughout but I learned things I never knew about Catherine the Great! It's an interesting read, just too long.

Being a history major, I enjoyed learning about Catherine's dubious beginning and her rise to greatness. She built upon Peter's work in bringing Russia into the modern age. Well written but a little slow in places.
