The remarkable true story of the life of Mary Benson: wife of an archbishop, friend of Queen Victoria, mother of three "unpermissably gifted" children-including E. F. Benson, and in love with dozens of women. So what the book does best is to evoke the life of a Victorian family : the grand houses with the numerous rooms for servants and retainers.

Benson is lucky to have a champion in Rodney Bolt who rescues her from the sidelines of history with As Good As God, As Clever As the Devil which is sure to be one of the most riveting biographies you'll read all year. Though Mary died in 1918, she is vivid and lively in this sympathetic biography that is often screamingly funny. The remarkable true story of the life of Mary Benson: wife of an archbishop, friend of Queen Victoria, mother of three "unpermissably gifted" children—including E. F. Benson, and in love with dozens of women

Sometimes touching and sometimes hilarious, this is the story of one lovable, brilliant woman and her trajectory through the often surprising opportunities and the remarkable limitations of a Victorian woman's life. Young Minnie Sidgwick was just 12 years old when her cousin, 12-year-old Edward Benson, proposed to her in 1853. Edward went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury and little Minnie—as Mary Benson—to preside a social world that ranged from Tennyson, Henry James, and Oscar Wilde to foreign royalty and Queen Victoria herself. Yet Mrs. Benson's most intense relationships were not with her husband and his associates, but with other women. When the Archbishop died, Mary, or "Ben" to her intimates, turned down an offer from the Queen to live at Windsor, and set up home in a Jacobean manor house with her friend Lucy Tait. Drawing on the diaries and novels of the Bensons themselves, including E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia novels, as well as the writing of contemporary writers and poets, this book creates a very rich portrait of Mary Benson, her family, her close female friends, and their world.

Mary Benson was the matriarch of an extraordinary family. Her husband was Archbishop of Canterbury (and also created the now much loved tradition of the Lessons and Carols service), one of her sons wrote the words to "Land of Hope and Glory," another, E. F. Benson, is the author of the delightful Mapp and Lucia books, and still another scandalized the Anglican establishment by becoming a Roman Catholic priest. Through it all, Mary's emotional and romantic life was directed entirely toward women. And all this during the Victorian/Edwardian periods! This is one of those little jewels of a book -- perfectly realized, beautifully written and a delight to read.

Mary Benson's life is full of life fascinating twists-- involving the ones with her engagement to her husband Edward, and the self independence she gained from her beloved mother. Benson's life did not turn out well with the relationship she had with her husband. Edward, a self notable and brilliant scholar, always on the duty through going to well renowned university as well as engaging in the school's affairs. Mary Benson and her husband's relationship begin to taint when they both decided to move from Oxford to Paris and all other parts of England. In this autobiographical novel, Mary Benson learned much from herself through the negotiations she dealt at public activities including ballroom parties. Benson did prove her true loyalty to her husband even as she finds herself hysterical when her husband doesn't always agree with her , and even noted that her children wrote in their diary that their mother is in the state of depression when their father doesn't mind her opinions. Edward's death shifts both Mary Benson's life and her children( noted that Mary doesn't involved in going through public appearances), and the death of two of her children even makes Mary's life downfall, but still her life continued to blossom through the people who aspire her as the best mother! [ Great Autobiography For Mothers and Rest of Family Members!]
