A great read for Wake Island, WWII, aviation and Korean War enthusiasts alike. Excellent! Against all odds he survived, mind over matter! Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 20 years ago. The first two chapters were a warm up for the real guts and glory! I have never met the author but just reading his book made me proud to be an American. Using the genious approach to cannibalizing parts to fly planes that had no chance of surviving against such great odds is overwhelming.

Anybody with any interest in learning about WWII, the USMC, and the story of men in incredible stressful and doubtful circumstances must learn of Wake Island and the siege of the atoll outpost in the two weeks after the Japanese attack on American forces across the Pacific area in December 1941. Many books have told the story as have more than a few movies made during the war. One film, Paramount's WAKE ISLAND was in fact he first scripted and filmed war movie shot after the war began, being released just a few months after the island battle was actually fought. The author of the book, Mr. Kinney, was one of the few Marine F-4F WILDCAT pilots who defended the island and went on to become engineering officer who led the efforts to keep the aircraft in the air. As long as the aircraft flew, the island held out. Two days after the last airplane was lost, the island fell. Kinney and the survivors of the air group reverting to the traditional infantryman that every Marine is initially trained to be. Then came defeat, capture, imprisonment, and ill treatment at the hands of an enemy that to this day refuses to officially acknowledge their black deeds concerning
POWS.
Surviving the war, Kinney stayed in the Corps and went to Korea, served in the military through the 1960s. Many of the Wake Island defenders did so too. The story is a good read, period. A lot of younger people in the USA ought to learn about these events and guys. We're free...they earned it for us!
I was very satisfied with the vendor of this book in described condition ( virtually new) and promptness of delivery. I think any purchaser would be too.

Well written, very interesting book. I have read several books on Wake Island, in most if not all you learn a little about John Kinney, but this book is his own story. From his pre Wake days to his escape from prison camp and later life. I highly reccomend reading this book. Not as detailed as most Wake books about events that occurred but mostly of what he himself witnessed and endured on Wake and as a POW. Without Kinney the defense of Wake would not have lasted nearly as long, he kept our planes in the air by his great mechanical skills. Truely a great American hero.

John F. Kinney explains in vivid detail the experience of what it was like to be an aviator/engineer during the siege
of Wake Island. Wonderful description of training before Wake, and that as a prisoner after the siege of Wake Island.
A true benefit to anyone reads this book. The moral is about one rising over extreme circumstances to better oneself
in order to share it with others. This really is book of hope to inspire those that feel they may have been dealt a bad
hand in LIFE !!!!!

Everything as promised. Thank you

Great story by a fighter pilot who was posted to the ends of the Pacific ocean a week or so before the Japanese attacked. Equipped with outclassed fighters, this small group had no chance of survival. The only drawback to the book is the somewhat 'sugar coated' description of life as a Japanese POW for nearly three years. Most allied captives were treated very harshly, including summary execution by beheading. The Wake Island folks were treated much better, except for the 98 civilians left on the island as workers - they were executed in 1943.

General Kinney, then Col. Kinney was my commanding office in 1959. He gave us a talk on survival and escape, then. He taught me skills that I used during the Loma Prieata earthquake in San Francisco. He was a great leader.
