J. Perelman a Life book. She reveals a comic genius whose private life was lived out in the long dark shadows.

Perelman's personal life was difficult.

Perelman wrote many brief, humorous descriptions of his travels for various magazines, and of his travails on his Pennsylvania farm, all of which were collected into books. Perelman's personal life was difficult. In 1929 at the age of 25 he married the 18-year-old sister of his school friend Nathanael West, Laura West (née Lorraine Weinstein). The two worked as writing collaborators on the 1935 play All Good Americans, produced on Broadway, and both were signed by Irving Thalberg as contract screenwriters for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the same year.

Published in book form under the same title in The Most of S. Perelman (1992) p. 7. 71. In pulp fiction it is a rigid convention that the hero’s shoulders and the heroine’s balcon constantly threaten to burst their bonds, a possibility which keeps the audience in a state of tense expectancy. Unfortunately for the fans, however, recent tests reveal that the wisp of chiffon which stands between the publisher and the postal laws has the tensile strength of drop-forged steel.

This is a biography of S.J.Perelman, an American wit and sardonic humourist who won international acclaim as a writer for the "New Yorker" and as a contributor to the Marx brothers' "Animal Crackers" and "Horse Feathers" and to the classic "Around the World in Eighty Days" for which he was awarded an Oscar and as a radio and television personality. The man is also described as an extremely complex, often troubled individual. From his poverty-stricken childhood to his days at Brown University, from his constant struggles with his work to his consuming relations with Nathaniel West (his wife's sister), this portrait is filled with unpublished anecdotes illuminating a personality at once elusive, sad tormented and uproariously funny. The author also wrote "With Malice Toward All".

S.J. Perlman besides being a columnist for the New Yorker in the 40's and beyond, was also a great gag writer. He was one of the men behind the comedy of the Marx Bros., providing classic quips that are still quoted by their followers.

Informative. At times amusing. At times depressing.

Why do so many brilliant humorists lead miserable lives? Perelman was, in my opinion, the most dazzling comic talent of the 20th century. Pick up "The Most of SJ Perelman," read the 100 or so short pieces therein, and tell me I'm wrong. I dare you. Okay, some will counter with Parker or Benchley or Thurber or Allen or Leacock-- I think I'm on solid ground with Perelman. But his life was not a happy one, and this bio does a reasonable job of limning his often painful journey through his frequently bitter existence. His marriage was unhappy, and both he and his wife strayed regularly. His children were strangers to him (as were most people-- "cuddly" wasn't a term to apply to SJP). He was miserly and cranky and paranoid.

But the work! The writing is unsurpassed, and must be judged on its own. So judge the art and not the artist and Perelman remains supreme. Biographer Hermann does due diligence at tracking Perelman's personal and business meanderings, but (mostly) leaves the work alone.

If you want to learn about Perelman the man, this is quite satisfactory, and likely the only bio we'll see. But don't let it keep you from his work, especially his early stuff-- pure bliss, even 70 or 80 years later....

Perelman is my favorite humorist. This isn't surprising-- he's the favorite humorist of many readers. Any honest arbiter would put him on the shelf next to Twain and Benchley and Thurber and Leacock and Parker. In his prime, from the 20s to the 40s, his New Yorker pieces were the funniest things in print. Don't believe me? Pick up "The Most of S. J. Perelman," a vast collection of his stuff, and read.

But there's the work and there's the man, and as brilliant as the work is, the life behind it is just as miserable as you can imagine. A wretched marriage, reluctant parenthood, failed romances, neuroses, dyspepsia, depression... it's all here. The bio is well-written and honest, but not a happy read.

So if you're a Perelman fan and want to know more about the man, be aware that he's not very likeable and go ahead and read this. Then pick up "Westward Ha!" or "Crazy Like a Fox" as a palate-cleanser....
